Battery

Post by thundermax »

Has anyone used a NAPA battery in their 56. If so, which one did you buy and was it original looking? Thanks!

Check out the following link: https://www.ctci.org/batteries-revisted ... nderbirds/
It should answer all of your questions about batteries. Your car needs a group 29 NF battery.

I sent out inquiries, regarding the aftermarket reproduction 1955-57 batteries. I was told that they are just a shell, with a smaller batter inside. That was enough to send me packing.

As long as the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and related specs for the smaller battery inside the reproduction case meet or exceed what was in the original batteries, I wouldn't be afraid to use them. Chances are the batteries being used are AGM/glass-mat/spiral cell technology (think Optima red-top batteries). Of course that means using a charger designed for use with AGM-type batteries.

Smaller than the original AGM Optima? You better have the distributor verify that.

I have a friend with 57 that has the smallest car battery I have ever seen. 1/2 or smaller than a 29NF. He hasn't any problems with it. Don't know the brand

It's an AGM inside a retro looking case. This one lasted 10 years in my Caddy.

Based on the price, why isn't it gold-plated?

If you are interested in retaining the OEM appearance of the engine compartment, then purchase the reproduction Power Punch battery. Otherwise, the NAPA battery is fine. I entered my car in AACA Class Judging that requires battery. . ."must be visually of the era of vehicle manufacture." So, I had to pay extra for the reproduction battery.

If you enter your car in a concours judging you need to have the period correct battery, with correct hoses clamps. etc

In CTCI concors judging, if you enter in the non-original category, no problem with the NAPA battery
