Broken Convertible Frame on a '61

Post by MJ Allbritton »

Hello folks,

I was recently putting my top down; hydraulics and relays, etc were working fine, then I heard a loud crack/boom and the top just 'flopped' all the way down into the trunk. I was able to get the top back up and saw that the base frame completely broke on both sides just where the frame comes forward from under the package tray. Rips at both break sites in the top itself as well.

Attached pics, but couldn't figure out how to get them right side up.

I've looked through the forum and saw that there've been several others who had similar breaks in similar spots. Finding an entire new frame is likely near to impossible and so it looks like my best options are to try to find replacements for that part of the frame or to remove those two pieces and weld them. That sound about right?

Was really looking forward to some good driving this summer, but that'll have to wait for a while.

Thanks, Mark.
