1955 Thunderbird after market Sunpro Ammeter wiring lessons learned

Post by RMBreitkreutz »

Recently purchased a 55 Thunderbird (6volt positive ground), generator). Previous owners had installed a 3 pack Sunpro gauge set (oil/temp/ammeter). Oil and temp work great. Ammeter not so much. It was wired to the 40 amp circuit breaker on the firewall by the start solenoid. Shot a few wires and found the breaker was in a failed open state. Sounds like a rattle. Replaced circuit breaker with a good checkout. Ammeter still is no good.
Gauge benched check good.

Looking for the appropriate ammeter tie in points and lessons learned to get the last gauge up and running.
thanks in advance.

I recommend dumping the ammeter and installing a volt meter. Finding one for a 6 volt car may be a a problem though

If you want an amp meter, I would suggest one of these. I put one on my Ford tractor, 6V positive ground. It simply stays on zero until the battery shows a discharge or charging state. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Amp-Meter-Fits ... 632-2357-0
