What Clutch or Transmission is This?

Post by cuul59 »

Need some help team. Took my recently purchased '57 (312, 3speed) to my local tranny shop along with the correct parts (disc, pressure plate, etc.) from one of the Tbird suppliers to have a new clutch and pressure plate installed. Got a call late today saying the parts I brought in don't match what's being replaced. Someone must have switched out the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and input shaft at some time over the last 63 years. The clutch that is in the car is a 9.5 with 23 splines. The correct replacement is 11" and 10 splines. Not to mention that the bolt holes in the flywheel are spaced differently.

So how can I determine what's in this T-Bird so I can get like replacements? There are no part numbers, or other obvious markings on the parts they took off. I do have the casting numbers from the transmission, if that helps, but don't know how to interpret them. (see pictures attached)

Any and all suggestions welcome and appreciated!

Sounds like a sedan clutch. The sedans had a smaller clutch than the Tbirds. I thought they were 10 inch, but could have been 9.5. Check with Concours Parts as they sell parts for the sedan and Tbirds. Give them the specs you have so they can see if they can match your parts.

Hill's also may be able to help as they do restorations on all kinds of Fords as well as Tbirds.
