Electric Choke Powering

Post by stevegintn »

I could not find the original post/thread, but whoever told me to find a different power source for my electric choke on my 62 Autolite 4100, you were RIGHT.

Per the new choke instructions, I had wired it to the coil. But the choke never seemed to work properly. We discussed several power sources, and I decided the simplest thing was to wire to the power window relay on the firewall (right behind the carb, choke side). With my little test light, I discovered that it's ALWAYS HOT.

My usually cold-natured 390 started on the FIRST ATTEMPT (usually takes several attempts at cold startup) and the choke immediately opened. Restart attempts, just touch the key.

I may have to keep the old Autolite, after all?

OK, I couldn't find it, because it was on the Modified forum.

Thanks again, Redbird64!

Glad to be of help!

I've always wondered if the original Autolite choke spring thingy and the hardware that holds the heater hose to it could be transferred to an aftermarket carb. They sure look the same but I've never tried to swap them.

I have an electric choke on my Edelbrock, and ran the power line down to the fuse box. Works great.

Thanks, Geoff - but sure was simple to go about a foot, straight back to the pwr window relay on the firewall (maybe your car doesn't have them?).

For the electric choke installed on my Autolite 4100 aboard my 61 HT, I pulled power from the top terminal of the three terminals on the voltage regulator. This terminal is wired to the primary output of the generator and is powered only when the generator is turning (engine is running). I also wired a 10 amp fuse inline with the choke.
