Radiator differences between '63 and '64?

Post by Aaron65 » Thu Jul 11, 2019 4:26 pm

I feel like I'm peppering this place with questions, but what are the differences between radiators for '63 and '64, and by differences I mean functional differences in fit? I notice that Champion Radiators (which are inexpensive) has a '64-'66 radiator, but none for '61-'63; however, they both seem to look the same and have the same dimensions. I'd like to use one, since they are inexpensive and they work well (I have them in three of my cars), but I don't want to do a ton of modifications to make it fit.

If that's not going to work, I'll buck up and probably buy a stock replacement from Bird Nest or something, but I'd always like to save a little money if I can. As always, any input is appreciated. Oh yeah, my radiator is old and my IR gun had the temp at 215 and climbing at the expansion tank after a 50 mile drive today, although the gauge is in the normal range...and I don't even have the air conditioner working yet.

Consider having yours re-cored. You will get a far better performing radiator and the quality will be superior as well.
I just did exactly that. It was more money but the difference is well worth it and maybe best of all, the fit was of course, perfect.

My 63 does not have A/C and my 64 does. My 63 has the original or original style radiator that I had rebuilt. The
64 has an aftermarket newer style someone installed
Before me. Reading your post and walking out with a tape
Measure at a glance I don’t see why one would not fit
In place of the other with little to no modification.
Remember that’s a quick glance with a tape measure.

Thanks guys,

I talked to a guy who sells Champion Radiators on the phone, and I examined some pictures online, and it looks like the lower mounting is different between the years. I might be able to make it work, but without being able to examine them in person, I just decided to buy a new original radiator for a '63. Recoring is an option, but the last time my local shop quoted me a price for a recore, it was well over the price of a new radiator.
