Just purchased 1960 Tbird, what should I do to bring home?

Post by M5558 »

I just purchased a 60 Ht with 352. It only has 2900 miles and has been a barn for the last 30 years. It starts and runs, what should I check before driving? Greatly appreciate any advise, this is my first project car.

How far is home? I wouldn't trust 30 year old tires at speeds over 25 or so. Be sure the brakes and emergency brake work well. If you decide to do it, have a fire extinguisher handy and let us know how it goes. I drove mine (which had been sitting two years) home over 100 miles with no brake lights (had my wife directly behind me) so it can be done if done carefully. But after sitting 30 years I can't imagine doing more than yard driving until a full mechanical check is done.

If it is only a few miles of back roads and there are no steep hills, with good brakes I would give it a try. Otherwise, "Bring a Trailer".

I would use a trailer until the car can be fully checked out. Some areas of concern would be brakes, fuel system, and tires.

That mileage is extremely low! We would love seeing some pics!
