I have two hood springs to paint. Since I lack the ability to make one as sophisticated as Karl's a few threads down, I looked around my garage for a way to make a cheap one with hardware I already had laying around. All that is needed are two 4" x 3/8" lag screws, two 3" turnbuckles and a piece of 2x6 lumber cut about 30" long. An improvement would be to use two 3/8" grade 8 bolts as the grade 2 lag screws have a tendency to bend a bit. I stretched the springs and sprayed brake cleaner on them to get the oil off, then sprayed them with semi-gloss black paint. There is about 3/4" of clearance under the spring. The spring can be rotated for full 360° coverage.
