yea that correct bottom line Bob,i cleaned a little more crud off close to the bolt and it deffinately does not have an L its 3.00 6DD 401 the top line seems to be - EF H the - is because i cant see it its so close to the bolt and i cant get my arm up there to capture it with my camera.So its not a locking its an open?

My guess is it's a WCDH. 3.00 open diff. You got a 1 tire-fryer

Your rear axle has a standard 3:00 to 1 Non-locking built April 4 1966 it should also have a Fomoco bug on it and a line of letters across the top that could produce other info but definitely not locking.

reviving an old thread of mine,since i have leased a workspace to work on her i was able to get it up in the air and clean the 3rd member tag off does this tell me what i need?im probably going to order a complete unit as i can really find anyone around me that i have confidence in rebuilding mine.sorry its upside down

I have a WEF-H axle tag and I'm 95% certain it came from my 9.375" rear axle from a 1966 428 parts car.
This is highly relevant because these are 31 spline axles while the standard 390 axle has 28 splines. Please take a picture of the center section. The ribs will definitively prove if this is a 9" or a 9.375" center section.
Last winter I replaced the 9.375" center section with a new 9" so I could change from a 3:1 ratio to 3.25 and include a Trutrac limited slip differential. Replacement gears and limited slip are very hard to find for 9.375" and the Ford 9" is plenty strong, particularly with 31 spline axles.
The seal surfaces of the axles were a little pitted so I installed sleeves over them

The picture is upside down. The ribs I need to see are on the other side of the yoke on the top side.

Oh, I see it is still in the car.
If this is a Q code 428, it is very likely a 9.375” ring gear with 31 spline axles

yeah its a running car,im guessing the best thing to do is pull an axle,bad thing is i need to be able to move the car.it is a q code 428 california car.ill see if i can snake my camera up there tomorrow.
