460\429 in a 66 Thunderbird

Post by sdupuis »

Does anyone have any info about swapping a 1970 460 (and c6 trans) into a 66 thunderbird that originally had a 390? I'm very interested in doing this but am unsure if it's even possible.
Thanks in advance.

Anything is possible with enough time and money. Yes it will fit, I saw a '66 Bird running in the deep 12's at the drag strip, he was running a 460+ engine and probably a C6 trans. However, what he did to the car to make it all fit is unknown to me. Sorry I couldn't help more....there's a couple of books out there that's a whole reference to swapping Ford parts and detailed specifications of major components. Check out High Performance Ford Engine Parts Interchange by George Reid, the info is probably there.

swaping rats

All I can say is that it would probably involve chopping and bashing of shock towers for width, and customizing the moter mounts to make sure the engine doesn't sit to high so the hood can close. As for the C6, that should fit easy. I have a C6 in both of my birds factory style.

429 in 1964

I've seen a 429 in a 1964 Thunderbird and messing with the shock towers was not required.

Thanks for all the replys.

I was really hoping to find a company that made a swap kit, but i guess there's just not enough interest for it.

Oh well, thank god for motor plates.
