Long tube headers for a ‘62

Post by HotSauce7 »

Good evening all.
Is anyone running long tube headers or have recommendations on a set that fits. I heard Sanderson’s are nice, just don’t know model or part number. Any help is much appreciated.

This topic has been moved to the 1958-1960 Modified/Custom portion of the VTCI Forum.

What's the question - are you wanting to install long-tube headers into a '62 T-bird, or are you wanting to install a set of long-tube headers from a '62 full-size Ford into a '58-'60 T-bird? Quite frankly, there are numerous instances (and a few posts) in the 1958-1960 Custom/Modified portion of the VTCI Forum that go over how difficult it is to install even the 'shorty' cast iron headers used on early 1960s full-size Fords. The long-tube cast iron headers used in '63-'64 definitely are not a drop-in swap and, given all the other items to clear from steering linkage and steering gearbox to other structural clearances, probably border on compromising the structural integrity of the unibody in order to get them to fit and work properly.

This thread from 2006, found by using the 'Search' function in the upper right hand corner by typing in 'squarebird headers', has some discussion on the topic:
https://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.net/ ... 3317#p3317

If you type 'Sanderson Headers' in the 'Search' box you'll come up with 124 matches, most related to '55-'57 and '61-'66 T-birds, but they should give you some 'food for thought' on going this route:
https://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.net/ ... on+headers

If you can use the advanced features of 'Search' by hitting on the 'sunflower' to the right of the magnifying glass icon in the 'Search' box and limit your search to 'headers' in the 1958-1960 portion of the Fourm you'll come up with 9 matches:
https://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.net/ ... mit=Search

If you expand that search by selecting both the 1958-1960 and 1958-1960 Custom/Modified portions of the Forum you'll come up with 10 hits:
https://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.net/ ... mit=Search

In the 'Search' for 'Sanderson headers' came up this topic for '61-'63s:
https://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.net/ ... rs#p111021

As you go through all the threads on headers you'll see a significant percentage of them refer to FPA headers, which are pricier than Sandersons, but they're also better quality and may be easier to install. The term 'block hugger' does come up in the threads. I don't know their applications for '58-'60 as most of the references to the FPAs (in fact, a limited search in the stock and customized 1958-1960 portion reveals 0 matches). If you want to go down that rabbit hole, use the advanced features of 'Search' and look for 'FPA' in the 1958-1966 stock and modified Forums - you'll come up with 203 matches:
