Digital Scoop Survey
Digital Scoop Survey
Just receive my Scoop, Jan./Feb. 2025. Thanks.
On page 14-16, it states 'Digital Scoop Survey'. However, there is not a web link to this digital survey, nor can I find where this Scoop survey is listed on the VTCI website.
This is an important issue and I want to respond to the survey. Please add a link to Scoop Survey at the top of the Forums so VTCI members can respond.
Also, please add the 'Digital Scoop Survey' in the next printed Scoop edition with a web link to complete the survey on-line. Guys, it says "Digital Survey" but their is no digital link.
Also, not knowing if there is a hack. Just received and email, from VTCI (?) asking for another $9.95, to support VTCI. Is this real or an internet scam? Clarify please.

According to the Club President and Publications Director, email invitations will be sent to contact Dues-paying members in good standing directly with an invitation to complete the survey via a link to a Google Survey form. There is a reluctance on the part of Club leadership to place the Survey in the Forum and on the website for non-dues-paying members to access it.
I can tell you that we're facing a major dilemma with the rising costs of printing, along with other hobbyist clubs like CTCI, Crown Victoria Association, LCOC, ad infinitum. It's gotten to the point that the current dues structure and membership levels cannot sustain a bi-monthly printed publication in its present form. Some clubs are going from monthly- to bi-monthly or quarterly printing, and those with a bi-monthly schedule are considering going to a quarterly delivery period for printed magazines (CTCI has been discussing this, too). Some clubs, such as the Early Ford V-8 Club, have been moving to a digital format and away from printed media for base memberships (I'm not sure if EFV8CA members have an option for paying more for printed copies, which is another option we have in the survey). Going to a mix of printed and electronic media is being seriously considered by VTCI's Board of Directors and leadership to help reduce costs and still provide a regular level of published content.
As for the email solicitation, I would recommend emailing the President, Bob McNeill, directly about this at bobmcneill.vtci@gmail.com .

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
I understand the trend of going digital, I just don't care for it and would pay more for a hard copy. I save many copies of the Scoop, especially for the tech articles & also for some of the ads. More digital just means spending more time on the computer which is not my favorite pass-time. More digital just means more stuff filling my email in box and getting further down on the list. Guess I will be reading more books in the bathroom (LOL). I get all the Hemming's magazines and they recently announced they are consolidating all three into one publication. They are going to lose content, otherwise the one magazine will be as thick as an old phone book and that will not happen. I get beautiful, quality publications from Hagerty, AACA national and AACA regional. Hope that doesn't change.
Sorry for the rant and no need to reply. I will wait for another email to link somewhere else like Google so Google can follow me on the Internet and send even more stuff to junk up my inbox.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
I agree, I would rather pay more for the printed version for many of the afore mentioned reasons. Just like parts for our classics, Quality costs more and if you can't afford your hobby best to pass it on to someone else. The current dues for both VTCI & CTCI are a drop in the bucket VS a trip to the grocery store. We are all not that Cheep or strapped for a subscription. How much are you paying for your phone subscription without batting an eye???

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
For the record, those who are getting the survey, i.e. dues-paying VTCI members, are supposed to be getting emails from their Regional Directors with the survey attached (I won't go into why it's being done this way).
One of the questions on the survey is directed towards whether there is interest in paying more for a "hard" copy version versus a PDF/digital version. As I'm not a member of another club which has the option of printed or digital copies of their publications, I can't speak to what the experiences are for those that do, such as members of the Early Ford V-8 Club. If anyone can provide anecdotes of such arrangements with other groups, please speak up here as well as on VTCI's Facebook page with your comments and observations. Hopefully the Club's leadership will taken an interest and read these comments, especially the ones in this Forum, in conjunction with the survey responses.
I am also one of those people who prefer getting a printed vs electronic version for many of the reasons stated above. I will also say that we are currently in the process of scanning old issues of the Scoop , which go back to the beginning days of the Club in the late 1960s, so we can offer an electronic (PDF) collection of the Club's magazine for sale to members and have access to all the stories and technical articles/columns that have been printed over the past 55+ years. A release date is too early to determine, but my goal is to have something available through VTCI's Country Store and at the International Convention in Grapevine, TX the week of September 9-13.
Al, I haven't receive a response from the Club President, Bob McNeill, re: email solicitations for donations. I do know there was discussion about such a move during our last Board conference call before Thanksgiving week, in part to make up a gap in dues vs expenses (folks, dues help keep THIS FORUM up and running!), as there is a pending increase in dues being discussed effective midyear. Again, I encourage you to email the Club President at bobmcneill.vtci@gmail.com if you received such a solicitation to confirm if one was intentionally sent or if it is coming from a 'bad' actor. Having a copy of the email that can be forwarded to Bob would also be helpful to help track down where it may have come from if it is from outside of VTCI.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
Just so it is known, at the present time, I HAVE NOT received any requests for additional funds to support the Club. I would think that IF a request was sent, it would have been sent to ALL, not from a select few, if at all.
As Alan states, if you can send a copy of that FUND requesting email to Bob McNeill, a search can be carried out to verify.
On another note, my vote is to maintain the current level of communication and printing of the Scoop, and increase the membership fees. In the past (approx 3 years ago) I proposed an increase. Being the CANADIAN Postal Agent, I did a mailing cost analyst, and found 6 issues plus shipping and handling to be approx $5.00 CDN /per issue, or $30.00 annually. This with exchange is $6.75/issue cost, or just at $40.00, for us for a year, here in Canada.
Keep our wonderful SCOOP in hard copy, with colour, if not, I will miss the library reading material.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
Raven - I'm not privvy to what survey results have shown so far, but I have to think that they would lean heavily towards maintaining a printed edition. Discussion has been to either supplement it with a digital 'newsletter' with interim information like event registration forms and time-sensitive or administrative items. The frequency of publishing, i.e. quarterly vs bi-monthly, in conjunction with a monthly or alternating digital supplement, is also part of that discussion. And with a printing contract coming due by mid-year, we're attempting to get positioned for at least the next 2-3 years on how to get publications to the membership.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
Alan I just forwarded the email to Bob that was requesting a $9.99 donation to VTCI. Currently and in the past I have been a member of numerous auto related sites. Some requiring dues, some not. On-line forums are what is most important to me and VTCI is currently the best in my favorites list. Years ago when I owned a Riviera, that Riviera forum was also excellent. I am willing to pay for a comprehensive forum such as what VTCI offers.
When I lived in Canada, I was also a dues paying member of SOTC (Southern Ontario Thunderbird Club). No forum but they did have a nice printed publication. When I retired to Richmond VA, became a dues paying member of Lambda Car Club International. Paid extra for their printed publication (digital + print). But I dropped that membership after a year because no events in my region I could attend. Currently a paid member of a regional car club, River City Cruisers, only get a digital news letter, but a good car club. I am a member of AACA that does have an on line forum and I get a quality printed magazine (dues = $45.00 per year). Also a Richmond region AACA member (dues $30.00) that also has a quality printed magazine and internet access with other members. Last, I get a quality magazine from Hagerty because I insure my 1966 T-Bird with them. An excellent insurance company with many benefits. Even if you do not insure your car with them you can get many benefits from them by joining their "Drivers Club" (including magazine).
So you see, I might or might not be typical, joining and paying dues for auto related memberships. I am getting older, so I stay connected with on-line auto related forums and printed material I can review at my leisure. Perhaps I am one of the few left that doesn't participate in social media accounts such as Facebook.
I am a retired designer and professor, perhaps one of the few left that enjoy reading and collecting books. I enjoy turning pages by hand. I have a nice collection of auto brochures, but that is another story for another day. Internet data can be lost or corrupted. But a printed version of information is easier saved and referenced for another day.

I may have said it before, Raise the dues like they are over priced at the time? Not. I want the printed version even though I have a '57 and the majority of the club is the bigger birds But I joined to help support the forum which is great!.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
VTCI is Thunderbird "International". I would pay more to see an expanded Scoop publication. Other car clubs I belong to provide a magazine size publication, not the small size VTCI offers. Frankly the content in the 'Scoop' is minimal. I would like to read more about members cars, more tech advice. I see the beautiful T-Birds on front and back covers, I have to search the publication to find info on these cars and their owners. Beautiful pictures but little back story if you can find it.
VTCI says International. For awhile I was following on-line a T-Bird group in Australia. Heck, for all the years I lived in Canada and a member of SOTC (Southern Ontario Thunderbird Club), their member hard copy publication was more entertaining and informative than our current Scoop. Just seems like most of the pages in the current Scoop are devoted to future conventions that I can not attend.
I am a member of VTCI primarily for the on-line forums. So raise the dues, give us a quality expanded Scoop publication. Everyone on this site are T-Bird nuts like myself, we are a community, and I will pay an additional $10-15 per year. VTCI is an "international" club and needs to act as such. That includes a full size publication four times a year.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
Part of the dilemma we face in assembling the Scoop is submission of stories by members. It's like anything else in this world - you get out of it what you put into it. Part of the reason why a supplemental digital version is being discussed (in addition to the printed Scoop) is to move some of the non-feature or time-sensitive items like event registration forms out and make room for more tech or feature articles. Regardless of size (remember that CTCI's 'Early Bird' is approximately 6x9), content is key. As I'm studying old issues from the 70s-'90s (including the ones I edited in the late '80s-late '90s), I do see how content and submissions by members makes a difference.abaucom wrote: Tue Jan 14, 2025 1:04 pm VTCI is Thunderbird "International". Remember, part of my task as Technical Director is to edit submittals from members and get them into publication - I should not have to be the sole contributor for technical content. Likewise, Terri serves as an EDITOR, not as a writer - she likewise needs submittals of articles, photos, etc. to develop articles. We've been fielding comments from members about the Scoop and its content (including complaints about how event-promotion-heavy it has been of late) and certainly encourage more - we can't, nor should we, live in a vacuum where don't pay attention to what members want, but - again - submittals from members are what's needed to bring stories to print. That also means contributions and submittals from our foreign members, too!

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
Alan, I really appreciate all your replies which just started about Scoop digital or print. Your last comment about needing more from members as so much of the current Scoop is about upcoming events. I am not a trained writer even though I authored a interior design textbook in the late 90s, with much help from my personal editor and the publishers editor. I am not mechanical inclined. Heck, last week during the cold snap in Virginia the battery gave out on my low mileage 2011 Camaro and I had trouble figuring out how to open the hood. The car stays spotless and almost looking factory new only because I know how to clean the little bits with Q-tips. Open the hood not likely, I leave that to others to change the oil and fluids every year even if I have driven less than 1,000 miles in the last year. Yes, the battery is in the trunk but do not know where.
Easy for me to to make suggestions when I have nothing to contribute. Before I retired and moved back to the States from Canada, I was a member of SOTC (Southern Ontario Thunderbird Club), an affiliate of VTCI. So it got me thinking. With so many regional and international T-Bird clubs, many publishing online or print publications, why can't the Scoop republish some of the articles from regional publications and give credit to those regions?
You want more input from members, there you have it from all the many regional and international T-Bird clubs affiliated with VTCI. VTCI is international and I would like to know more articles from other T-Club publications. When I was a SOTC member some great Teck article's in their publication I never saw in the Scoop. Years ago I followed an Australian T-Bird club on the web.
If the Scoop needs more content, technical and personal, just look at the publications from all the affiliated regional and international clubs. There is much content out there that is not republicated in the current Scoop.
I am a member of VTCI (International). The content is there, regional and international. The clubs just have to foreword their articles and share on the Scoop.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey
Good suggestions. They need to be passed on to the Scoop Editor. These are also dependent upon local chapter editors - domestic and foreign - sending copies of their newsletters to the Scoop Editor/Publications Director with their consent and/or request for VTCI to reprint tech articles, as well as submit items of interest, in the Scoop.
When I was handling Scoop editor/Publications Director duties in the late '80s-'90s and producing a local chapter newsletter, I received copies of chapter newsletters from some - but not all - of the chapters that published them. Again, if none are provied, how is the editor or Publications Director to know what's out there (for the record, I don't get newsletters from chapters, for instance, except for the one lone chapter I'm a member of in Kansas City). To use an old editor's adage, it can't be printed unless it's submitted.

Re: Digital Scoop Survey Responses are here
2/10/2025, re: Survey on Publication Format Options
Hello Membership Leader re: Survey on Publication Format Options
Thank you very much for providing the survey as a tool for continually improving the VTCI Scoop. As others have stated, I was hoping to find an online link to respond to the 3 pg Jan/Feb 2025 issue Scoop Options survey. That's why I delayed my survey response. Oh well, here are my thoughts.
Q1) Digital format obviously offers the potential for useful advantages. However, I still enjoy the print copies. I have been saving them as reference for most recent yrs.
Q2) Printed is very important
Q3) Read each issue front to back
Q4) Would still read issues if only digital
Q5) Features valuable for the digital format: Love the 3 advantages of digital (interactive, searchable, sharing ideas, info, ETC.
Q6) Format impact on continuing my membership? Geez, I have been a member since 1980s, still have my same two 1964s (Convertible & Landau, and will always remain a member.
Q7) Digital access? Yes,I have had reliable high speed Internet access at home & work, on multiple tech platforms, since 1983.
Q8) No concerns about digital access.
Q9) Scoop Publication charges: Yes, willing to pay extra for both formats.
Q10) Devices used: Daily extensively use Windows 11 PCS, iPad, and Android phone.
Q11) Device manufacturers: Apple iPad, Dell & HP desktop & notebook PCs, Samsung Android cellphone.
Q12) Please keep up the fine work, including move to at least augment the online content. I have been a volunteer with multiple organizations for MANY years and I appreciate the challenges of managing an evolving volunteer organization. Since I am an info junkie, more "how to" content would be valued and that makes the most sense via online delivery and interaction.

Thanks for your contributions. Take care,
