62 Bird doesn’t start
Good afternoon friends. I am new to the group. I have a 62 Thunderbird I picked up a few months ago. I work two weeks on two weeks off. Before I left for my last shift I filled up the tank and got a new battery. Now that I got back it turns over but won’t start. Ran fine before I left. I thought the carb might have been at fault. So I replaced it with a like rebuilt carb. I sprayed some brake cleaner in it at it fired but didn’t run
Re: 62 Bird doesn’t start
Do you have spark?
Re: 62 Bird doesn’t start
Yes. I sprayed brake cleaner in it and it did combust then nothing. Almost like it’s not getting fuel. But ther is fuel getting to it
Re: 62 Bird doesn’t start
How long did you crank it after you replaced the carburetor? It takes a while for the fuel pump to fill the fuel bowls.
When you open the throttle do you see fuel squirt from the accelerator pump nozzles?
Is the choke closing properly?

1. Check for a clogged fuel filter- Canister attached to the engine-driven fuel pump. Replace filter.
2. Remove line to the carburetor and have someone crank the engine- see if you are getting fuel from the fuel pump. Could be a bad fuel pump. You can replace the factory pump or add an electric pump if it is bad.
3. Check the level of the float in the bowl of the carb is set to spec. Make sure fuel is spraying in a fine mist at the venturis and not dribbling into the carb.
Good luck- let us know what you discover!

Any luck?

Sorry guys. Waiting on parts
Re: 62 Bird doesn’t start
This is is going to be my daily. Without knowing the recent history, I decided to start fresh. So I got new tank and pump. Aside from more fuel is there a benefit going from 5/16 to 3/8 lines?
Re: 62 Bird doesn’t start
Apparently you confirmed that no fuel was getting to the carburetor.
From my experience there is no value in going to the larger fuel line. These cars ran fine with 5/16” lines from the tank to the pump.
Which fuel pump did you order? If you do some searches on this forum you will see lots of posts about “bad” new fuel pumps, especially anything made in China
Most people are recommending finding a good original core and getting it rebuilt. In fact I bought a US made core about a year ago to have ready to rebuild if needed.

Good to know. I got a rebuilt carb from carbmeister. (I heard good things about him). I intend to rebuild the carb and fuel pump for spares.
Re: 62 Bird doesn’t start
My plan is to rebuild the fuel pump when I need it. That way there will be a better chance that the diaphragm is newer and flexible. And that the check valves work.
If I rebuild it now and let it sit on the shelf for 3 years with no use I do not expect it to work very long if it does at all.
