Front spring contacting bump stop backet

Post by David Robertson NZ »

Hi,

I've got my '61 back on the road after many years rebuilding everything. I've been getting a clunk sometimes going over large bumps and found that it is the front springs contacting the bump stop bracket. The springs are not centered on the shock - they both bow out, enough so that sometimes a coil scrapes on the bracket. Temporary fix has been to put spacer washers under 2 of the bracket bolt holes to angle the bracket out slightly. Any ideas why the springs bow out like this? Could I have done something wrong, maybe with the lower spring seat?
