Trunk Carpet

Post by GeorgeG »

Does anyone know of a company that makes a real carpet for the trunk of a '61-'63 to replace those silly cardboard mats? Or is this something I'd have to custom build?

If you're intent on lining the trunk with carpeting, then you'll have to custom make a set of rugs, side panels, etc. Either make friends with a custom upholstery shop or learn how to cut, trim, fit and install yourself. If you already have a set of factory-style mats/panels in the car, an upholstery shop or you can use those as patterns. As for materials, check online upholstery supply houses for automotive-grade carpeting, or larger home improvement stores for indoor or indoor-outdoor carpet. As to how many yards of material to get, that I don't know off-hand.

I will say I have only seen one instance of a '61-'63 trunk that was trimmed with the same type of carpet used for the interior (80/20 closed-loop) - it was a custom-fabricated instance for the original '63 Limited Edition "Monaco" Landau that was presented by Ford to Prince Rainier of Monaco. The edges of the panels, wheelhouse covers and large center mat were serge-bound like the individual rugs/mats inside the car, and it looked very nice.

Thanks Alan. That's what I thought. After the holidays I'll call the upholstery shop that did my interior to see if they're game.
