1957 Transmission swap help

Post by Solo57Bird »

As I am working on the restore on my 57'. I pulled out the 3 on the floor transmission with a side throw it had in it from the PO. The number off the trans is: 1A-7006-A which according to Dr. Google seems to be from a 50's F100 pickup?

I need help/advise with what options there are to add in a 5-speed manual on the floor. The best suggestion so far is the T5 Mustang trans using the Mummert's adapter. It might take some doing to find the right price in good condition and some mod to fit. so I will sell/trade the 3-speed trans to hopefully find one that will work for me.

Would the 83-88 Tbird turbo coupe T5 trans work as well on the 57?

First off, how in the world did a 3-speed transmission from what appears to be a '53 or '54 Ford car (based on the casting date of July 7, 1953) get into a T-bird? Was the original transmission a 3-speed, OD or Ford-O-Matic (If it's a later car the data plate will tell, otherwise you'll have to look at its gate release/invoice or do some other pre-owner historical investigation)?

Second, I'm not sure about the '83-'88 Turbo Coupe T-5. Again, some sleuthing on overall dimensions and location of the top-loader shifter would be needed for comparison against a Fox-bodied 'Stang. Others will have to chime in here.

Thanks for the reply Alan.. yeah, I do not know how/what/why the PO put in a 3 speed in the 57 Tbird. He did some interesting mod to get the Hurst shift in. Is the trans from a 50s car or truck?

The original was a Ford-O-Matic D Code (Serial D7FH289252 - Code: 40 AE XA 14 E 3 1

According to 55Blacktie the TC T5 trans won't work as it's rated at only 240lb ft torque.

Based on the casting engineering number, 1A indicates 1951 Ford car, but casting date makes me suspect it came out of either a late '53 or early '54 car. Are there any other ID numbers cast into the body of the transmission or any tags attached to it with stamped ID numbers? Photos of the sides of the transmission, especially the driver's side and the front, would be helpful. I'm not sure about the interchangeability of 3-speeds between early '50s flathead 6/8, 215-223 I-6s and '54 239s used in cars and/or trucks, but I am open to learn something here.

If I remember correctly, Mummert had recommendations on the best 5 speed to use. Obviously, the V8 ones are the better ones (stronger) although the 6's will work but things like the input shaft are different (thinner) and require an adapter so I am told. Certain V8 ones are better, but I don't have any reliable info on which ones.
