1965 horn issues

Post by 65tbird17 »

I am at a complete loss. My horns from my steering wheel do not work but a wire from the battery to the horns show they both work. I have tried cleaning the contact points up and re spacing the contacts points but still no luck. Any ideas?? Thanks!

This pertains to a 64, but should be the same. Behind the steering wheel cone, as a part of the plastic structure that holds the turn signal cam, there is a carbon post with spring. If anyone has serviced the steering wheel or replaced the turn signal cam, it’s possible it was removed. Also, there is a ground wire near the steering box that needs to be connected to complete the circuit. There may also be a horn relay that could have gone bad. Probably best to start there. The brush/spring should be in the area circled.

Tony, I think the horn circuit changed after 1964. In 64, there was only a ground wire up the steering column. Pressing the horn button(s) grounded the coil in the horn relay mounted on the radiator panel sending power to the horns. In 65 on, there was 12 volts to the switches on the steering wheel.

65 and 64 are different. Here is a 65.
