Power steering fluid

Post by ELTBIRD »

Sifoned out all the old PS fluid today and filled with fresh ATF type F. What a difference! Quit and smooth.

Hi,

My '64 has been making all kinds of noise from the PS pump. I was thinking it's the pump but then I just read your post and I'm wondering if I should just change the fluid. How can you tell if it's the pump or not?

Thanks

Go to your local Dollar store and buy yourself a cheap turkey baster. Suck all the fluid you can out of the power steering reservoir and refill with type F fluid. If the fluid was the problem, you will be able to tell instantly. If so, do it once or twice more to get the rest of the diluted old fluid out. I have also added some Lucas power steering lube to help.
