55 Aftermarket Steering Wheel

Post by 55blacktie »

Is anyone using an aftermarket steering wheel on a 55? I would like a smaller-diameter, leather-wrapped banjo steering wheel, but I do not want to modify my steering column, turn signals, or horn. If an adapter is required, it will move the steering wheel closer to the driver.

im sure you've seen CASCO catalog. seems to have a 56/57 15" wheel but doesnt list one for 55. wouldnt have though the wheel replacement would require any other modifications (if it was designed to replace the original).

Thank you. I'm familiar with that particular steering wheel. Unlike the 56-57 steering wheels, the 55 steering wheel is flat. The 55 steering column is longer than 56-57. If the 56-57 wheel will fit the 55 column, it will put the steering wheel closer to the driver. Besides limiting space between the driver and the wheel, it could also be a safety issue.

I would like to use a leather-wrapped banjo steering wheel, which would be flat, like the 55 wheel, but an adapter would also move the steering wheel closer to the driver. The steering column might be adjustable enough to compensate.

Guess I'm picky; has to have full wraparound leather.

Try CON2R, they say they will build you a steering wheel, any way you want it.

CON2R uses Grant adapters. Grant has a Ford adapter that will work on full-size 1956 Fords, but I don't know if that applies to T-birds as well. I don't particularly care for the modern look of CON2R's banjo wheels. Grant has some nice banjo wheels, and I'm waiting to hear from them.
