Outside remote mirror problem

Post by ShirleyBird »

On my 65 landau the remote driver side mirror plate underneath broke so I bought on to replace it with. I bought all of the pieces and now I can’t seem to get it to fit back on properly. Do you know how to remove the retaining screw sleeves out of the door that hold the plate down? Or know how the mirror fits back on
Thanks

If i am understanding your post the nuts in the door are compression nuts similiar to a rivet but threaded for a #10 screw. They can break loose and turn in the hole if this is the case you will have to remove interior door panel and grab compression nut with pliers, vise grips or whatever you have that will fit up there and back out screw . Or drill them out but the downside is you need a special tool to reinstall new ones if you can find them locally, you do have the option of just using an nut and bolt This is what sounds like is happening these nuts hold the mirror mounting plate on and the setscrew holds the mrror to the mounting plate along with the rear notch.

On the base that gets mounted to the door there is a pocket on the rear side. The mirror on the rear section has a pin or notch about .25" this should slip into the pocket and the set screw would snug it up. Check the bottom of the mirror to make sure you still have this notch (pin) it may have been sheared off.

I'm wondering if the bottom section of the mirror that sits on the base didn't get distorted somehow by someone gerry rigging the mirror in the past to get it to stay put.

Yes it is on backwards the pocket "cave" should face the rear.

Oops it was correct the cave on base is towards the front of car you were correct the set screw should center into the v notch on base towards rear.

The head of the screw may be too big and preventing the pin going in. Try a CSK one or grind the head down on yours. I think I had that problem one time.
