1956 TB engine code 312 or 292??
Frame off restore was done in 2012. Engine and Tran were supposably overhauled but I can’t find the Ford Block casting number 6015 on all Ford Y Blocks?? There is a number on a small plate on right side of block behind generator area- and numbers read upside down 32866.
Anyone have any idea what that might mean? Am I really getting a 312 Ford?
Has a manual cable pull choke too— but intake manifold does have a steel threaded plug in the place where it looks like a fitting would go to run a pipe up to an automatic choke on the holly teapot carb. I think I have seen pics of this to be correct way. ??.

Hi, If you have a 1956 with auto. trans. it should be a 312. Manual trans. had a 292. Also there should be a LETTER designation. No birds had a manual choke that I know of. There was no steel plug. Send a picture that will save a lot of guess work. Also, Ford really didn't matching # to speak of. GM surley did. Try to find a book called Ford Y-Block by James Eickman. Another sure way is to check the flange on the trans. end of the crank it should have a DOT or boss oposite the cut out on the flange. If it runs good just enjoy it. good luck

The 6015 is Fords universal number for all engine blocks, regardless of size. The prefix and suffix letters/numbers tell what it is, although the 292 and 312 engines had the same numbers/letters.
The small plate with the number may be a ID number for a Ford remanufactured engine.
No early Tbird came with a manual choke. What you have is an aftermarket addition.
The dot on the crank mentioned above, besides checking the internals, are the only ways to check what the block was originally

Thanks All . And I did find 4 number block # and letters above and forward of the oil filter canister on the block—appears just carb & Manifold Maybe some question and just a single vacuum retard diaphragm distributor installed. I hear a ‘56 312 has a 2 vacuum diaphragm distributor??
Found fuel filter back by fuel tank blocking flow- Found tank had rust in it! One of just a few items that I couldn’t find a purchase receipt for when off frame refurb done!!? So installing new fuel tank and filter tomorrow . Getting anxious to drive this Bird around the block! JG

To fend off rust in your new tank in the future, fill it to the brim before putting her in winter storage. That will eliminate condensation from forming.

May I also add to the above response, Remember to add Stabil to your gas tank. Ideal the motor for a few minuets.

Hi again— Well new gas tank installed and new inline filter back by tank installed. That inline filter appears to have captured the rust filings coming out of old tank. Now- also put on a a new fuel pump 3 weeks ago and it would start and run good— for about 5 start ups and idle! Rev a little bit.. then poor 10 gallon of gas in old tank— and that’s when engine would start only with a little priming.. then discovered rust in filter and tank. Glass bowl filter at engine looked clear. So now new tank and filter- blew fuel out of new tank to line up to fuel pump. Reconnected line to fuel pump and started cranking engine. No fuel to engine fuel filter glass bowl until prime poor gas into carb and it would start for 5- seconds and eventually filled filter glass bowl up. Crank more and not getting fuel to carb or to glass fuel filter from fuel pump with just cranking engine. Could my NEW fuel pump be bad now? It’s not putting out fuel!
Seems like got to be fuel pump SO I ORDERED IN ANOTHER! Do here Saturday-or Monday! I’m anxious to see if this TBird will go around the block—ya know? THOUGHTS ON NEW FUEL PUMPS ? $100.00 each!! JG

Could also be the inlet and outlets are reversed on your new pump. This has happened to me recently and gave many of the same symptoms. Disconnect the fuel lines from the pump and install a fuel pressure/vacuum gauge then crank the engine a few seconds to see if your creating vacuum or pressure then hook up the fuel lines accordingly.

Hello Jim,
The fuel line on a T-bird goes higher up than the tank and the fuel pump (on the frame rail just before the pump). If there is air in this place, the fuel pump cannot create enough vacuum to suck fuel over that hump.
When you changed the fuel pump, you introduced an air pocket there and now the pump is not priming.
I solved this with two people: one was cranking and one other held the throttle open and sprayed starting fluid in the carb.
You need to run the engine at 1500RPM or so (idle is not enough) for a minute - then you will get fuel again.
I thought about another solution, but never tried:
Since the tank is not vented, I could introduce 4psi or so pressure in the tank. I thought I put a tire valve in a modified gas cap and a hand pump. This should fill the pump by itself because it has check valves.
(You can try the same with heat, but heat and gas in the same sentence sound like a really bad idea when writing it...)
The last thing is taking the soft line on the pump off again and suck on it before installing, so it is filled with gas when attached to the pump.
(I also did not try this).
Good luck!
Bob

Re: 1956 TB engine code 312 or 292??
Thanks— we did put a little air hose blow into tank and it gave some back pressure and also the fuel did start coming out of the line that hooks onto the fuel pump. Then we connected the line to pump and started cranking.
Glass bowl filter finally filled- few bubbles and started. But only ran for mane 5-8 seconds at fast idle and quit
That’s when we took line loose from pump to inlet side of filter - started cranking and no gas out pump line!
Was thinking inlet and outlet marked at pump. But- will check this. Hooked up like was on old pump we thought.
Will check further on Monday . Thanks. JG

Did you check the fuel lines you might have kinked one while working on the fuel problem, Just a thought.

Double check all the fittings for tightness.. If there is any leakage it would prevent the pump from sucking. What is the condition of the flex line going to the pump. Has it been replaced lately? They can go bad internally and show nothing on the outside.

Re: 1956 TB engine code 312 or 292??
Good Evening All.... New fuel pump on and new hose line to pump. The gas filter glass bowl filled quickly and started soon after. Engine runs good— smooth idle and a drive around the block we went! Steering good— brakes in front seem to do most of braking when power brake applies— still fair amount of pedal movement then good brake stops. Guess that is the way the power brakes work!??!
Put back on garage lift to give lub job and change - dirty dark oil and filter. Ready— I loosened and removed oil canister holding filter and dumped oil. But- upon new filter reassembly- in checking with shop manual I could not find a spring and washer that should have been on filter shaft bolt to keep filter tension to block adaptor !? Apparently must have previously been lost on an oil change.. or at overhaul 560 miles ago and 8-9 years ago! I am installing a New adaptor and spin on oil filter tomorrow when my new kit shows up!! I just hope it didn’t mess up the engine being ran some this way! Seems to run real fine but anxious to get it on a road out of town after new oil fill up.
Any comments about this1956 only having a one -single- vacuum advance diaphragm on the distributor? Did some late year 56 have this vs.a double diaphragm ? Thanks- Jim G

Please post pictures of your distributor and carburetor so we can determine what you actually have. Picture posting info is at the bottom of the forum in the How To area.
PLEASE invest a few bucks and buy all the shop manuals for your car. Definitely will save you much time and be an education.
