1965 bird Harmonic balancer question

Post by Herb66 »

I'm helping out a friend put his 390 back together after powder coating brackets, etc..
We are wondering what the pin on the rear of the balancer is for?..Is it the timing mark?
We see no marks or bumps on the balancer itself.
I've searched Google and this site but came up empty.

The timing pointer is a small stamped piece, the marks are in the damper. the only good picture I have is of a pretty dirty engine, but Iv'e got the marks painted. Hope this helps, Bob C

Hi Bob:
Thanx for the reply...That sure is my motor..and my balancer...but you're setup doesn't have this pin in it...It's about 2 inches long, and sticks out the back of the balancer.
I'll see if I can get a pic later in the week..

I don't think there should be anything sticking out of the balancer, much less something 2" long

This is what I have..if you look close, you will see the pin hanging out the back of the balancer.

Herb, in your picture, I do not see a timing pointer. It would appear someone mounted a pin in the back of the balancer, to act as a reverse pointer OR added this pin to possibly add an external balancing weight.
It should not be there originally.

I looked closely, and cannot find any bump or other marks on the balancer itself that would be a timing mark.
confused.
I looked on ebay, and see my exact balancer, but with no pin hanging out of the back.

If you reinstalled the pointer, do you think it would line up at TDC, at the pointer and the "pin".?

Now that I can see the "pin", my guess is that it is a balance weight.

Herb, to answer your original question, the timing marks are on the outer ring FACE of the wide flange crank pulley.
If you have a 65 Shop Manual, an illustration of same can be found on page 8-29 or page 8-31, under the Part 8-2 Section. OR page 9-15, Section 9-1.

Powder coating is pretty thick, and the timing marks are very shallow. If this has been powder coated, then I'm guessing the timing marks have been covered up.

Find TDC on the compression stroke and mark it then get some timing tape like this:

I believe the high temp of power coating would destroy the rubber in the balancer. So hopefullly it was disassembled before coating and reassembled afterward. If they also covered up the timing marks I'm not sure what you're going to do.

The pin thing is very strange looking. When they balance these they drill a series of holes just about that size on the back. I wonder if they ever have to add weight and that's what it looks like.

that damper reminds me of something I've seen on old Ford dump trucks with a 330 or 331. but maybe not. It's not the right one for your tbird, and you need the right pulleys too. good luck, Bob C
