Update:
The 16 tooth gear did the trick. The speedometer indicates about 1~1.5 MPH fast at 30~60 MPH/GPS.
That's about as good as it gets and better than many new cars.

Heh heh, sorry I missed this whole thread. Busy last month. I went through this headache a few years ago and came up with your answer as well. FWIW, at the time Don at the Bird Nest told me off hand that one tooth equals 3 mph ...I figured it out anyway. I really like Don for sourcing used parts--he really knows his stuff!

my 66 had a 17 tooth gear was 5mph fast put 18 tooth in now right on the money according to my garmen mt 66 parts car also had a 17 tooth geat

So your 66 had one more tooth to start with than my 64. Do you have a C6 tranny?
