1962 Cold Start question
OK, bouncing off MJ Abassi's Hot Start post, I have just the opposite problem.
If I don't run my engine for even overnite, it seems like the carb dries out?
I pump the accelerator several times, turn the key and it may hit once, but does not start. I end up having to "prime" the carb with a little gas.
Once it starts, runs to warm temp, all I have to do is just touch the key and it starts right back up (without touching the accelerator).
I have installed an electric choke, and it seems to be working properly (opens upon warming).
Outside temp is not the cause, because it does the same thing, in warm weather.
I am also wondering if it's time for an aftermarket carb? (I don't believe a new carb would do this)

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
It should go several days with out "drying out", far longer than overnight. I suspect you will need a rebuild and also get a kit WITH the power valve or make sure you order one separately. It is not difficult to rebuild, take your time, take pictures, and study the directions in the kit. Ethanol free gas ( E-0) will help some if available in your area.
When apart, check the housing for the power valve for flatness. These are often warped by overtightening. FIle flat and evenely retorque.

PLEASE invest a few bucks and buy all the shop manuals for your car. Definitely will save you much time and be an education.

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
Thanks, Joe! - as I said, my carb was professionally rebuilt a couple years ago (by the 'Carbmeister') and has less than 100 miles on it. So it's possible that it might need a new power valve, but doubtful?Joe Johnston wrote: ↑Wed Feb 06, 2019 5:34 pm It should go several days with out "drying out", far longer than overnight. After I get the linkage restore project completed, I will consider to try to rebuild the carb. But I am NOT a carb guy (so if I trash it, an aftermarket carb will be next purchase).

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
I do like to keep my 65 original but looking at the numbers on my Autolite 4100 it was from a 62 Tbird so it was changed from a PO. Also would have cost me almost as much to have it rebuilt. So had a new 600 cfm Holley installed from Summit and could not be happier. Car never ran so well..Good luck..

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
Thanks, Richard - if you saw my recent post "Throttle Stop Issues" abut my factory carb linkage being rigged - I am trying to replace all of that right now (waiting on parts).Richard wrote: ↑Tue Feb 12, 2019 10:16 am I do like to keep my 65 original but looking at the numbers on my Autolite 4100 it was from a 62 Tbird so it was changed from a PO. My question for you is, for the new Holley you installed, did you retain all the original linkage (including the kickdown stuff)?
If you did, can you please share a photo here? (or, if you didn't, would like to see the config for the new carb)

G'day Richard.
I don't use Photobucket anymore. You have to pay them to use their services.
You can post the images direct into this forum. Have a look down at the bottom where it says "Options - Attachments".
Click on the attachments tab and place your photo's there.

I made a very quick checklist of how to post photos posted in the Testing Testing section.

Many thanks, Richard! - looks factory to me?
Were you able to use the original accelerator rod?

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
To be honest I am not sure..I know the mechanic I used then told me but I forgot. He closed his shop so I cant ask. To bad because he was an old time guy who had a 65 Tbird as his daily driver so he really knew the car. Someone came and gave him an offer for his property he could not refuse..stevegintn wrote: ↑Wed Feb 13, 2019 11:21 amMany thanks, Richard! - looks factory to me?

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
No problem - I only asked, in case I go with an aftermarket carb, down the road?
If you want to know for sure, when I get my new accel rod this week, I will measure it and let you know? (I could measure the one I have, now, but it's bent).

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
To close this out, after I got all the linkage issues resolved, my 62 is still a B****h to get cold-started. If it has sat for over a day, I have to prime the carb with a little gas (even then, takes several attempts for her to finally fire up).
My car is not perfect, but now at least, she's road ready and I will be driving soon as this weather clears. But not going to put up with the cold-starting issue very long.

Re: 1962 Cold Start question
A lot of the problem can be the electric choke conversion. It starts warming up as soon as the key is on. If it takes a while to get it started, it will have opened the choke too much.

Yea, RebBird64, I looked at that, and it doesn't appear to be opening too much, too soon?
