battery rundown protection

Post by TbirdIntender »

Well, I did something stupid--left the lights on and killed the battery. Once you're used to newer cars that manage their own lights, you just lose the reflex that used to make you turn them off.

So, has anybody put in battery rundown protection? I did a site search and didn't find anything.

A number of years ago I bought a headlight warning buzzer kit at Walmart for less than $10. Don't remember the details or know if they are still available. Do a search for "headlight alarm kit" and you'll find a few. They are easy to make, there's at least one site and a few videos that show how. It's only a relay hooked up to switched power on one side and the light circuit on the others, located beside the fuse block.
Hope this helps

This vintage of car is kind of ideal for a mechanical switch at the battery. There are a couple of types. The only device affected would be the clock. They are easy to install, therefore easy to remove if it doesn't fit your use (or you want a clean look at a show). Convenient enough for overnight or longer sitting.

Have a look at these eBay items:

New NOS Heathkit Headlight Alert SK-3 Alarm # 164483930609

Universal Headlights On/Off Reminder Buzzer Alarm # 372975068671

Car Headlights reminder Alarm & Controler # 174090534278

Eurolite Euro Yellow Headlight Alarm LED Flasher Kit 10136 # 401682700145

I'm sure there are lots more out there, but this will give you an idea of what's available.

Hope this helps
