Carbon brushes for motor in top pump

Post by apines »

Hi,
I replaced the brushes in my top pump today and it's a vast improvement. It's not surprising given how little was left of the old (probably original) brushes (below). I wanted to share my source in case anyone else needs to do this and, like me, prefers to repair parts rather than replace them. The proper brush appears to be 0.25" x 0.25" x (roughly) 0.5". Anywhere that I found this size wouldn't sell them in tiny quantities. What I wound up with was a 13/16" long brush from McMaster-Carr https://www.mcmaster.com/65705K51/. They're too long so I had to cut them down to 1/2" with a dremel with a cutoff wheel. I then used a drum sander attachment on the dremel to put a curve in the end to roughly match the motor's rotor (it'll wear fully into shape over time). I cut off the spade lug and soldered the braid from the brush using an 80W soldering iron. Anyway, since it took a bit of hunting around to find brushes that fit I thought I'd share. Happy Halloween!

-Andrew

Great to see Andrew. Each of us, has our unique need and abilities to repair, remake, improve the existing 50 odd year old technology.
Your efforts on designing and building the retro fit RELAY packages, for the 64/66 Birds convertable top relays, that do not need any modification to the car wiring harness are a plus.
Keep the process moving, and thanks for your efforts.
