wiper motor help

Post by dgalietti »

Does anyone here by any chance have any pics or diagrams of how the wiper motor goes together?

I was experimenting again and not paying attention to where a check ball goes... and whether or not a spring flew out with it. I looks to me like the check ball goes right in front of the screw cap.

The good news is that there really isn't much that can wear out inside of this thing. There are piston valves like inside of a valve body.. and a plate that moves back and forth.. and that's about it. There is a diaphragm where the cable connects, but I couldn't get it apart without damaging it.
I pretty much cleaned it up... Found some oring's for the screw caps, used some anaroebic sealer on the top cap and put it back together.

Then discovered I had the check ball left over.

Would gladly help but the last time I tore one down was almost 30 years ago, when I had a problem. Short of taking another one down to see the assembly orientation, I can not be much help. Did you try to contact Trico and see if they can be any help?
VERY LONG SHOT but what the heck.

There is a spring behind that checkball. I have a wiper motor here missing a checkball because the spring propelled it to parts unknown when I opened it up.

Well.. that unfortunate.. I did find a spring that looked like it came out of a pen a few days later, but I have no idea if it belongs to the wiper motor.

I guess I need a rebuildable core and to start over more carefully.

Yes, the spring in question looks like a pen spring.

I have this motor missing a check ball I can send you.

Two-speed? Hell, that's an option on a 63 Galaxie. Conversions like this for a car with vacuum wipers I understand (I have a 55 Ford that I want to do this to), but the 63-late 60s Bird hydro system with adjustable speed is virtually bulletproof as long as you don't Jack with it and keep the hydraulic hoses in good shape.

I sent my wiper motor ('66 Town landau) to a rebuilder in the US, (can't remember what the company name is at the moment).ts and got a full rebuild, well worth it,

(Here in NZ we don't have the luxury of ready access to T-bird parts.)

I was looking into the electric motor conversion, but I think I would rather keep the hydraulic unit if I can get it together.
From what I can gather they are extremely reliable, and after taking it apart I can see why.

I am going to get a rebuildable core, and then hopefully have a backup unit should I ever need one.

I have a core (complete, unmolested) if you want it.

Thanks George, but I already found a core. I will try to take some better pics this time for anyone else that runs into the same problem
