1964-later Engine ID Tags - Pics Needed

Post by Alan H. Tast » Wed Mar 13, 2019 5:52 pm

Those of you who've been following a series of articles Scott Logan and I have been placing in the Club's magazine, Thunderbird Scoop, on engine bay decals and authenticity for '50s-'70s T-birds may be interested in knowing that we have a new article coming out in the May-June issue which will focus on the paper engine ID labels used on the fronts of surge tanks for '64-'66 and on valve covers for '67-'71s. In conjunction with this, we're putting out a call for good photos of the aluminum engine ID tags that were bolted to the engine starting at the beginning of January 1964 (if not earlier), both on and off the car, in order to chronicle their development and codes found/used on them. We only have a couple of pics of '64 tags and no '65 or post-'66 ones, so if you can help out please PM me for my email address so that you can forward some. Thanks in advance.

I have an aluminum tag off a Mercury 410 that was installed in a '66 Q-code T-bird parts car I had.

It is certainly an original Ford tag, but I don't know which vehicle it came from. It says "410" on it, so I assume it goes with the engine. It was a verified 410 with Mercury script valve covers and a 3.98" stroke crank shaft and 4.05 bore block

The '410' tag/ID code is one that was used for '66 428/Ford 4v. I don't have a list of Mercury-Lincoln numbers to compare against, but I do have aL-M MPC from '64-'65 (but really need '66-'67 to catch the Merc 410).

This is my ID tag insitu for a '66 HT.

BTW, how or where can one get the "Thunderbird Scoop"? Being on the other side of the world makes it difficult to send things, but surely its online?

If you'll forgive my bluntness, "Thunderbird Scoop" is the bi-monthy magazine published by Vintage Thunderbird Club International for its members. It is not published online. BTW, it's the paying membership of VTCI and those that advertise in the "Scoop" that finances and keeps this Forum open and on-line. You can become a member of VTCI by going to the home page www.vintagethunderbirdclub.net to find a link to join VTCI and receive the "Scoop" along with the ability to purchase VTCI's 1964-1966 Original Factory Specifications Manual, which is only available for sale to VTCI members.

Alan, I had paper tags on the block of my 57 and 63, my question is has anyone ever deciphered what the numbers mean? I have heard many different stories especially about the 57 F code but never been able to confirm any.
