62 Cylinder Shields Over or Under Trunk Mat?

Post by kbuhagiar »

Hello Folks,

I am installing new trunk mat and boards on my convertible.

Do the hydraulic cylinder shields go on top of the mat, or does the mat just butt up to the shields?

I've looked online and I have seen it done both ways.

Thanks.

I have seen it done with the mat under the shields. If it were my car i would do it this way, It looks cleaner.

Not wanting to hack this post, but have a question on the mats you are using. Is it the Burtex or the Fleese Vinyl? and the second question is the boards. Are they printed boards or only fabric drapes?
I am doing a study for my needs down the road and what to buy.

Raven,

No worries, glad to help.

Disclaimer: My 62 is far from original, so I am not concerned with originality, just a neat and clean installation.

I am using the fleece-backed vinyl (not Burtex), not because it is cheaper but because I prefer the appearance.
On top of that, I am not crazy about the original 62 mud-brown pattern, so I chose to use the original pattern for a 61, which is a much brighter grey plaid. I know, blasphemous. But I like it.

Second, the boards are all boards - no 'drapes', and they are all covered in the same vinyl material as the mats.

My kit was purchased from the Bird Nest, with assistance from Don, who was extremely helpful.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheers, Ken

Just wondering is trunk mats are fabric glued to backer board by user, or by factory. OR are a printed board product.
Original was a litho product printed on the backer board.
I wish to duplicate/produce/ purchase the OEM printed boards for my car. I have OEM boards now, which are tired and will buy replacement if available.
If OEM is not available, I will reproduce to fit my needs.

If I recall correctly, originally the shields were installed before the mats, so that the large mat covered the mounting hardware, with pieces inside the shields installed to fit against the brackets for the deck cylinders. A look in the factory trim/sealer manual should be able to confirm the installation sequence, which I still need to do in case I got the above wrong, especially for the cutouts/inserts. Think about it - if the mats are held in place by the shield hardware through the floor, you'd have to remove the shields before you can remove the mats to clean them if needed. Engineers and designers had a specific reason why they had a sequence of assembly for things like this.

I concur with Alan. The mats should go over the shield mounting hardware.
