Front Brake Noise ???

Post by ricklove »

1963 Coupe, 126k miles; brakes serviced and all shoes were replaced 10 years ago & less than 6k miles ago. Starting to get noise from right front wheel when braking. Pulled drums and saw that shoes and most components looked new; and drums had no ridges & were smooth. Replaced inner & outer wheel bearings , wheel seals, wheel cylinders, and self adjusting tabs. (Right front wheel cylinder seemed to be sticking before replacing it.) Bled brakes and drove car. Pulled to the right under hard braking and had "rubbing noise" (not grinding) just as pedal was pushed harder just before stopping. Readjusted right front and pull was stopped, but still the noise just before stopping. Any ideas what's causing the noise and how to stop it? Thanks!!

G'day,
Could be just that the right hand shoes have glazed over.
When you pulled the drums of did you give the inside of the drum and the shoes a rub over with some medium, emery cloth?
Karl.

The drums were smooth, but I'll try the emery cloth and see what happens. Thanks!!

Used emery cloth on the inside of the right front drum (looked new; no ridges, scars, scuffs, etc) and on both of the shoes (10 years old, but only 5k miles). Reinstalled hub, tightened bearings, and adjusted "star" wheel to try to obtain even pressure to rotate wheels. Still slight pull to the right and "groan" noise when stopping. Any ideas? Thanks!

I suggest you do a break in procedure on the pads. (Involves stopping multiple times at increasing speeds)
Your brakes shouldn't always pull in the same direction but in the end, drum brakes can pull in one direction or the other at any given time.
