roadster tonneau cover. oem or repro?

Post by jimrides24 »

My late father at one time owned a 1962 red convertible. He purchased a red tonneau cover for it. He sold the car but kept the cover. I recently found the tonneau cover in the basement at my Mom's house. I wish to sell but am not sure what they are going for. It is in good shape. Has some scratches and is missing one of the chrome lockdown tabs. It has no cracks. I'm petty sure it's an after market. I can find no markings on it. Can anyone shed some light on what it may be worth today? thank you.

If it is a FOMOCO manufactured cover the underside should be raw fibreglass and have a number written on it with a paint stick.

Would it be raw, i.e. fiberglass matting/hairs showing through? I was under the impression that repops, because they're of lesser quality, typically have the fiberglass hairs exposed/visible, while the factory-made ones have the gel-coat on the underside for a smooth finish. Photos I have of an original unrestored early '62 roadster show a relatively smooth surface on the underside.

Alan

By raw fibre glass my comment was refering to no colored gel coat but they would have a coating of resin> But seeing that you have one on your 63 roadster maybe it would clarify the finish or lack of one.

The one I have access to, which is in a garage at a home I am currently staying at right now, in BC, has an unfinished underside, which is unpainted, smooth (No rough sharp fibre strands) but is visible glass fibre. There is a very "thin" resin top coat, and the owner cannot prove it to be a TRUE Tonneau. His car is an early reported Roadster before Ford did VIN reporting.

I’m guessing you sold your father’s old tonneau cover a long time ago. But if you didn’t, please reply!
