DIY Repairing Old Surge Tank

Post by hemicharger69 »

How do I resolder and reseal my old 1963 coolant surge tank? Is this something I can do myself with store bought equipment?

I have a feeling this repair will need to be done often so I am ready to invest in the right tools within reason.

I found a local gray beard and he did 3 holes for 15 bucks. I figured that was cheaper than buying the parts and screwing it up. Good luck and keep us posted with pics if you do it yourself.

Man, I sure hope that you have better luck than I did with mine!

I took it back to the radiator shop and had it "repaired" three (3) different times.

I even tried to fix it myself with JB Weld.

Not only did it LOOK awful; the @$%#&* thing STILL leaked!! :x :x

Ended up buying a new one.

GOOD LUCK!!

Btw, does anyone know if the surge tanks for '61-63 are interchangeable?

Reason I ask, I have one off my '61 parts car, and don't know whether to hold on to it as a replacement on my '62 (or, maybe sell it)?

I'm not sure but I think the only difference is where the filler hole is, as far as fitting to the block and where the outlet is I don't think that will be a problem.
Again not sure though.

Needed to repair mine after I had it shot blasted and they managed to remove all the solder!! Old timer rad builder I know, resoldered all the joints and bracket and showed me the pressure test so hopefully it will be fine once I finished everything else!
