G'day.
As far as I know the 63 hardtop only had normal indicators. Mine has no hazard lights and I haven't seen it on any electrical schematic.

4-way Emergency flashers were not mandated until MY 1964. You would need to add a switch, flasher and modify wiring to add to a pre-'64 car.

Ford/Rotunda offered a "universal" kit for an add-on flasher in the mid-'60s that used a bent sheet metal bracket that mounted to the dash and a chromed toggle switch: it was intended to be mounted in the glove box of most cars (i.e. Falcon, Fairlane, Galaxie, Mustang) - finding a place to mount this on a pre-'64 'Bird in the glove tray or on/under the dash may present some aesthetic challenges. A search of the Fourm should yield some threads about this item.

One can be made using two Bosch relays, a toggle switch, and a flasher can. That's the easy part. Then you have to find the wires leading to the lamps. That's the crawl on your back under the dash part. I can try building one and let you know how it goes.

No flashers on my 63 SR and were not an option. I know they were on my 64 and 65 but I am not sure if they were options or standard equipment with out doing research. Good Luck

I figured that the flashers weren't required back in the early 60's for the T bird, there are none on my 65 Mustang either....

Here is a suggested circuit. It can probably be built for $10 to $15.

Tom, I am a little confused on your schematic, would the flash can not be in the relay coil portion of the circuit, rather than in series with single pole contacts?

Bill, the four way flashers in 64/65/66 were an option, and part of the Road Convience Package, not all cars had that option.

Well, that is an interesting thought. That would use the flasher to switch the relays on and off. However, there may not be enough current draw through the coils to activate the flasher, since the flasher is activated by heat created by the current draw through it. Have you ever installed a heavy duty flasher for towing and then when the trailer is gone, the flasher is really slow to operate? So that may not work.

Since I drew this on a whim, I now see a mistake. We don't want all the current going through the switch. 12V should go to the can at all times. Then the only power going through the switch should be for the relays.

Heck, I should just delete the whole thing. It is off topic anyway. I guess I read the first question wrong.

Not completely off topic, but is worth pursuing as a "how-to" for those wanting to add to cars without 4-way flashers. Revamp the schematic and reinsert.

For anyone interested, I have corrected the diagram above. I have ordered the parts and will post my results in the modified forum or the tech forum.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

I am interested in your schematic, I have a 64 Galaxie Convertible and would like to add emergency flashers.

Thanks
