Negitive cable

Post by ranchbird »

Where does the negative battery cable bolt to on a 56. Mine had a 2ft. cable going to the intake manifold which I'm sure isn't correct.

From what I have seen and the way I have mine, it is attached to the bolt on the block that holds the spark plug wire bracket.

Mine is only about 8-10" long & connects to the same bolt that attaches the hood latch to the firewall. Been that way since 1976 & as far as I know is the factory location.

Although functional, no electrical ground wires were originally attached to the hood release brackets.

I wonder if there is a diagram in the Electrical Equipment Installation Manual?? :agrue:
PLEASE invest a few bucks and buy all the shop manuals for your car. Definitely will save you much time and be an education.

In 1956 Tbirds the ground from the battery was connected to the engine block. The engine was grounded to the firewall with a short cable attached to the left cylinder head. Hope this helps, Mark

The 56 Electrical Assembly Manual does not show a clear picture where the ground strap goes, but does show the cable as running below the rocker arm cover, presumably to the engine block as I noted above. Both 55 and 57 were different.

I was just under my car this fall replacing the spark plug wires and noted the negative battery cable was attached to the block with the same bolt that attached the wire loom.
I also noted there was another larger threaded hole in the block right next to it that could have been used for the cable.
I was thinking at the time. using this larger hole exclusively for the battery cable may have been a better idea. The cable end connector has a hole that would better fit a larger bolt (as opposed to the bolt holding the loom).
