55 vs 56 Simulated Wire Wheel Hubcaps

Post by Haz567 »

Do the 55 two piece simulated wire wheel hubcaps have a rounded cross section shape vs the 56 similar hubcaps?

Didn't notice I hadn't posted a picture. Note the rounded shape and too large of an offset from the dog dish on the one that is on the car. Have since learned that the rounded (on car) one is incorrect. Does anybody know what the rounded ones may be off of?

Many years ago I saw a set of wire hubcaps that were for a '57 that were fabricated from a set of Corvair wire hubcaps. There was supposedly only a few original oem wire hubcaps made for '57's. I can't remember for sure but I think they used the Corvair "baskets" and another set from something else for the outer rims.

Thanks for the reply Voltron! That is interesting.

Also, you see my PM concerning those beautiful floor pans you showed on a previous post?

1955/1956 wire wheel covers have a groove in the edge of the outer ring. Some early cars may have a smooth edge, which is a carry over from the 1954 passenger cars. The number of early 1955 models equipped with the smooth is very limited.

HI David:

Would the oversize offset from the dog dish inner (maybe 3/4" - 1" from being flush w/ dog dish) point towards these being off a 54 car?

Did Ford use a few parts from previous models for the 55-57 T Bird. ? I thought they did to save on their inventory parts.

I can not answer this question. The information in my last post describing the different wire wheel hubcaps came from the CTCI Judges training manual.
