Changing Output Shaft seal on overdrive trans

Post by seany-boy »

I am getting close to replacing my output shaft/rear seal on the overdrive trans and believe I can do this with the trans in the vehicle?
Should I be planning/ordering the associated bushing as well- I am not sure what it actually does and it is not really described in my manual. Can this also be changed with the trans in the vehicle?

The rear seal can be changed wit the trans in the car. As far as the bushing goes, I think that it helps keep the yoke in alignment with the output shaft, but it's a guess on my part.

Thanks Paul,

I think I read somewhere that the rear extension housing can be removed in vehicle as well so not sure if I need to look at the bushing as well. I assume it would come out with the extension housing?

I looked in my Motor's manual to see what it said about the overdrive unit. It had a rather generic unit and procedure in the book. It also was assuming the transmission was already out of the car. But I hoped the breakaway diagram I had from a different book might be able to help you.
