Does anybody have experience with the Pertronix Ignitor 3?

I have had the original Pertronix in my car since the 70's. It's a great little unit that's simple and trouble free. Just make sure you recheck you base timing after installing it. It changes mine a fair bit.

I'm running the Pertronix igniter II in my car. It is easier to change than points, and you do it once and you are done, also a lot cheaper than changing out the whole distributor. I've been using them since the late 80s.

Other than the timing change i'm not seeing any negatives. Just seems a natural move. I'm bone stock so the only real advantage of the ignitor 3 is that it seems a bit more heat resistant.

Buy two units or carry some points & condensors because like all electronic devices they either work or they don't - there's no limping home if your Pertronix goes on the fritz - your engine will just die completely.

Well I ordered up a coil and ignition conversion...will let everyone know how it turns out.

I have the Petronix II in my T-Bird now. Point were wearing and I decided to try out the Petronix while doing a small top end refresh. I have used Petronix on my VW Bus for over a year and it is so far very reliable. And I was able to fire up the T-Bird with 1 turn of the key after the instal. I still keep spare points and condensor in my toolbox just in case, but have yet to have one of these fail.

Put Pertronics Ignitors in both of my Birds after the Mallory optical units kept blowing out. Fine part.

I'm on my 2nd Ignitor (I). My fault. Poor ground.
Measuring resistance from the distributor to battery is important. 0.2 ohms max as I recall.
I ran a separate ground wire for the distributor. No issues since. Good luck.

That's a great tip, thanks! Once the transmission rebuild, power steering pump, steering box rebuild and water pump are installed I'll get back to ignition!

I forgot to mention, the little ground wire inside the distributor is important to overall grounding of the distributor. Mine was severely oxidized which increased its resistance so I replaced it while addressing the grounding of my Ignitor. Good luck.

At the Pertronix site there is an indication this is determined by numbers on your distributor. Also be aware there is an Ignitor, Ignitor II and Ignitor III. Good luck. Here's the link.
