Not sure what they used back in the day, but the places where I went thru the red when I was doing the weatherstripping and getting the old glue off, the base coat looked like chrome. You can't really see any actual metal flake in the paint, it's so fine.

They still use the aluminum powder for butyrate cover fabric aircraft. Very fine. You can't detect individual flecks. Looks like silver though, not chrome.
