1955 Thunderbird Steering Wheel Swap

I am considering swapping out the steering wheel in my 1955 Thunderbird for a smaller more modern wheel. My understanding is I may have to change the column as well. Has anyone ever done this? What parts did you use?

A 56/57 steering column should work in a 55. Then you can get the smaller 56/57 wheel that is offered.
