jack set up

does the end of the jack column slide into the upper clip on a 56? my jack column is 31 1/4 inches long and appears about 1 inch long to have room to slide into the upper clip.I may not have an original jack but it looks like the one i had on a 54 ford.I have a trim manual that has a picture of set up and describes procedure but picture quality is lacking and very dark.Any help is appreciated.
