Auto seat back release

Post by marbro79 »

I'm having issues with the automatic seat back release, I guess it's the same old story for these 40+ year old mechanics that seem to happen now and then. Mine are both clicking on and off if I leave the door open, but not all the time. I'm concerned about it being a fire hazard, has anybody solved the issue here? Maybe a bad ground wire? Thanks and stay safe.

It never hurts to find and clean body-to-ground connections and check wires for breaks in insulation. More often than not cleaning ground and making them "bright and tight" will take care of a lot of issues like dim lights, slow power window motors, erratic heater blower operation, etc. If that doesn't take care of it, some basic electrical trouble-shooting is in order. As seat backs on front seats of two-door cars pivot and move, I would check wiring going to the latches, which might be buried behind the seat back panels on on the underside of the seat frame. In fact, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the seat, set it on some sawhorses and clean up/relube the tracks, along with checking the wiring. You might even get lucky and find some loose change under the seat.
