Re: Non suspension lubrication ?

Ignition points rubbing block. If it wears down, advance changes (reminds me, mine is overdue). Requires a special (silicon?) lube. Also, don’t forget the door/hood/deck latches/hinges (white grease/spray lube, etc.), and all lock mechanisms (graphite). Grease the parking brake handle shaft too (cab...

Re: Non suspension lubrication ?

I had to lube my tach because it was making a loud swirling sound. I used WD40 to try to clean up any old grease, then I used 3 in 1 oil. Someone told me there is a similar lube point on the speedo. How do I remove the speedo to get to the lube point? I also put a few drops of engine oil (is that a...

Re: New Owner tune up qiuestions

Doing my first tune up on my 55 292. 1) Is there a port that I can get manifold vacuum for a vacuum gauge? 2) Do I need to disconnect the vacuum advance line to check timing at idle? 3) How can I check the timing mark on my pulley to ensure it's set to "0". There was a small white stripe ...

Re: Installing options cost and difficulty

As people age out, there will be less and less interest in these old cars. Nothing lasts forever. Another factor: Especially desirable/quality-manufactured cars that sold fairly well (compared to early Vettes, for example), tend to be better cared for/maintained, so a higher percentage of baby bird...

Re: Installing options cost and difficulty

Not to mention: Those who consider their vintage collector car as an ‘investment’, tend to forget that driving an unrestored original car into the ground usually doesn’t help value appreciation. Mine is still quite ‘pretty’, but the 100K+ I put on it has likely pushed all the engine/chassis parts wa...

Re: 55 Front suspension refresh

I was just wondering if a penetrating oil like PB Blaster would reduce any friction and help preserve the bushings. I also have no idea if the pads in the leaf springs are even there but will look in the spring and see if anything like that should be used there also. The ‘vintage’ shop guy recommen...

Many of the early T-Bird catalog vendors also stock used parts. You may have to contact several to locate a specific item. ‘HILL’S’ is the one I’d start with.

Re: 55 Front suspension refresh

I have about 135k on my suspension which I haven't touched in years other than new springs 35yrs ago. Everything still feels tight and I make sure I grease every fitting I can find. My question is about the 'A' frame bushings. The whole front end is tight and drives straight & true. Just wonder...

Re: Installing options cost and difficulty

My ‘55’s only factory options when delivered: OD/skirts/eng. dress-up/heater. Back up lights were an easy install (radio/anntenna also). PS would be nice in the rare instances while parking, but since most of my driving is rural highways, I prefer the more precise manual steering to the vague 50s po...

Re: Brake Adjustment "clicks"

I have actually never heard of 4 wheel aftermarket disks for these cars. I believe the 2 wheel set-ups used a proportioning valve which I believe was adjustable. Could that be your issue? I believe the earliest disk conversion kits included oversized (?) rear wheel cylinders to balance front/rear b...

Re: Can the clock in my '57 be rebuilt?

Didn't have that problem. Go to a LED in the clock and the stock bulbs everywhere else. Good idea (assuming 6V LED bulbs that fit are available?). I also need a brighter bulb in my aftermarket SW oil pressure gauge. I’ve ordered some LED 6V #51 & #55 bulbs that should be around 4X brighter, and...

Re: Can the clock in my '57 be rebuilt?

I had the clocks in my 54 Ford and 56 Bird converted to a quartz movement by Williamson's Instruments. Over 20 years on the 54, maybe 10 on the bird. Both work flawlessly. My quartz conversion still working after 25 yrs. But, the new mechanism DID block much of the light from the clock bulb. Since ...
