Re: Fuel pump removal. How?

"dreaded" is the word for it. It will eat up all the 'old' rubber parts. Get a pump with the new diaphram in it. Hope your carb is OK.

Re: how to change the steering column seal and grommet ?

Thunderbird83, The grommet may just be stuck on the chrome column or someone may have glued it on. It is supposed to just slide on/off. It goes toward the cockpit side of the large seal. The seal, as I stated, is held on with 6 or 8 hex head sheet metal screws or someone may have glued it on also. G...

Re: Fuel pump removal. How?

Remove line at fuel filter, have someone else crank the engine or if you have a remote use that. Place a can or small jug at end of line and see if fuel flows freely. Could be clogged filter or carb inlet valve/filter. The pump will come out with a bit of twisting and pulling.

Good luck,

Re: how to change the steering column seal and grommet ?

Thunderbird83, That info is a good read BUT ... The FIRST thing you want to do is disconnect the battery!! Also before removing the steering wheel make a small chisel mark on the hub and the shaft for re-installation. When you remove the turnsignal wires write down the COLOR CODE of where each wire ...

Re: 56 Horn Issues

The Thunderbird assembly manual has a pretty good blow apart diagram. Look at the end of the horn wire lead and make sure it is clean and free of any corrosion. There is a part under the ring that makes contact when the ring is pushed make sure that is on correctly. I had a similar problem and found...

Re: Things to look for when buying a baby bird.

There is a guy in NY that repairs T&C radios, I think he is in Hemmings, if your are not a pureist there are others made to fit. They don't look original but have AM/FM etc. You can get a reproduction that looks exact but has AM/FM + bluetooth et. al. for around $650. Under the car the rust is u...

Re: Gas Tank Installation

The O-ring is the same set up as on my 57 Chevy and I found a very slight film of liquid dish soap applied to the O-ring and inside of tube greatly aids installation. It will not harm anything and after the soap dries out it sort of "locks" the O-ring in place but comes apart easily later ...

Re: Intake manifold

Flex fan was not original. Probably added for overheating problem along with push fan. A good radiator and 6 blade fan should cool an A/C car just fine if the original shroud is in place. I just changed the intake in my '56 to a '57 which I got off ebay for $150. Keep looking and you'll find one. Go...

The boosters were made by Midland Ross and you can still get parts from them I believe.

Re: 57 passengers electric window motor removal

I believe that is correct. Don't know why it seems passenger windows get this way first. Maybe because it doesn't get used as much. If you have the rollers removed you can get the motor and regulator out with a little wiggleing around (motor and regulator that is). It is a little tricky to get the p...

Re: Smaller steering wheel option.

I got mine for my 56 off ebay, same wheel and cheaper than suppliers. I too am 6'-3" and I know it is like getting into a sardine can. Kinda need a big shoe horn to squeeze into these cars. Were people really smaller then or what?

Re: Wiring Attachment Clips

Yup, but you will find there are a lot of "strange" things about these cars. A 40+ year bodyman friend of mine says that all the cars of this era were kind of "experimental" for the automakers as they were trying new things for the market and trying to stay ahead of the "oth...

Re: What is the better way to buy & replace seat form?

HI, Thunderbird83, I recently replaced and recovered my seats. I got the foam from Tbird headquarters (lowest price). The seat is bolted to the rails but you have to take the rails and seat out of the car as one unit. The seat bolts to the rails under front corners and at rear just outside seat fram...
