Re: Manifold versus ported vacuum advance
By the way, at idle without vacuum to the vacuum advance, timing is set to 10 degrees BTDC (versus the 6 degrees per spec). With manifold vacuum to the vacuum advance, timing reads 18 degrees BTDC, not enough to cause pinging.

Re: Neutral Safety Switch
Thanks Terry!
All - by the way, I just ordered a roll pin removal tool that looks like a C clamp, so it's a way of pressing the pin holding the shift lever out and avoiding having to pound it out. Will let you know if it is fit for the purpose.

Re: Manifold versus ported vacuum advance
Hi Scott. Yes, I get that. Take a look at the link below (the second posting from the former GM engineer) and let me know what you think. The basic argument for using manifold vacuum is that when the fuel mix is lean, spark needs to be delivered earlier in the compression cycle to light it off. Mix ...

Manifold versus ported vacuum advance
Hi all. Lately I've been running my '64 T Bird's vacuum advance on manifold vacuum versus ported vacuum. Using manifold vacuum for the advance, the engine seems to have better low end and top end throttle response. Wondering if you all have tried this and what your opinions might be?
Cheers,
Doug

Re: car wont go into drive
Hey there methos. Yes, a bit counter-intuitive to be sure. I was flummoxed about this as well until I happened on this link to the squarebirds.com website. It's an excerpt from a operator's manual for a '60 t-bird cruise-o-matic: Doug http://www.squarebirds.org/picture_gallery/TechnicalResourceLibra...

Re: Neutral Safety Switch
Thanks Steve, I'll check it out. By the way, in the technical notes section of this forum there's a guy who designs detante plates, and he recounts a story from an acquaintance who's bullet bird slipped out of Park into Reverse and smacked into his garage door, complete with picture! Doug

Re: car wont go into drive
Hi methos, a couple of thoughts on this. One is that if you haven't already, you could consider replacing the points in the distributor with an ignition module like a Pertronix. Coupled with a higher voltage coil and MSD spark plug wires or equivalent, the car will start and run better. These old t ...

Interesting how inefficient carbs are compared to fuel injection. Scott, is your 390 stock in all other respects? Doug

Thanks Scott. I was thinking about the shift mechanism at the tranny after I sent my post last night I'll check it out the next time I have the beast up on the ramps. Doug

ABS Power Brake makes a dual master, check it out. I think it will work with the stock booster.

Re: Fuel Injection!
Hey Scott. Great postings, by the way, a real contribution! The last post I see is Feb 22nd. Are there postings after this date? Really interested in your assessment of the performance of the fuel injected beast versus stock, and also an idea of how much $ you've sunk into this project. Thanks, Doug
