... on my search the carb that Ward has is rated at 450 CFM. Not that much "oversize". I wonder what size jets are really in it.
I really have no idea what jets are in it. I've never investigated carbs ... way it goes like 'a Bat outa hell' doesn't run rich and I don't drive it enough to worry about MPG ...

Foot lightly on the gas pedal, turn the key to start - it starts in 2 seconds.
This even after the car has been sitting without running for weeks.
I still don't know how to tune the thing though, it's on my list of things to do. My impression is it still runs a bit rich.

That's why I was wondering. Almost everywhere I've read people are getting much better milage. There is absolutely no sign of it running rich. No smell, no soot in the exhaust.

... runs clean after warm up you should be good. It could just be old carbon deposits burning off. Smell the exhaust when warm, you should basically not smell anything if it is not running too rich. Also check the exhaust diffusers in the bumper for any soot build-up, there should be not much if any.
