Re: 1964 Thunderbird - Its time for timing

My 61 was modified some during its rebuild several years ago. Headers, roller rockers, slightly bigger camshaft, larger valves and larger diameter exhaust are the primary changes. I mention this because modifications may require other changes. In my case, I increased the stock Autolite 4100 carbure...

1964 Thunderbird - Its time for timing

Hello everyone, I am getting ready to start my bird for the first time in a long time. The engine is stock. I installed a new distributor when I did the timing set. What should I aim for in regards to initial timing? I have heard 6 degrees some say 10-12 ? How much total timing should I shoot for - ...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird - power woes - just a lonely horn

I am sorry :)

To bypass the ammeter I cut both ends of the wire back to good solid wire, then I spliced in 10 gauge wire bypassing the meter. As far as a voltmeter goes, I plan on installing one with oil pressure and temp gauge.

Re: 1964 Thunderbird - power woes - just a lonely horn

I am glad the info is out there. I went ahead and bypassed the ammeter as well when I performed the repair - so now - hopefully, it is smoother sailing.

Re: 1964 Thunderbird - power woes - just a lonely horn

Hmm... The horn on a 64 is a bit of a weird beast. The contacts on the steering wheel do not carry any power, they are the ground for the horn relay mounted on the radiator panel at the front of the car. There is power to the relay coil and one side of the contacts. When the horn ring is pressed, i...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird - power woes - just a lonely horn

Lol! I will have you know that is one of the most premier alternators to come off a 94 v6 mustang LMAO!!! I do have an HEI though... :bday: Seriously though, the car is stock otherwise. I have not hooked the alternator up, I was hoping to do the 3g upgrade. Now, I think I will go back stock though ...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird - power woes - just a lonely horn

Hey there! Thank you - I will take a look in the morning. I am trying to figure out how to follow the path of electrical on this. At the ammeter, I do not have power. When I took the leads off neither was hot. I went ahead and bypassed the meter for safety/taking a possible problem out of the equati...

1964 Thunderbird - power woes - just a lonely horn

Background: I have not started or even had the battery hooked up in my 64 for almost 2 years now. I just recently started the process of getting her on the road. I have the alternator off, was going to upgrade to the 3G alternator. I replaced the timing chain, put an HEI, painted and powder coated ...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird rear end gearing

Wondering if I should go with a solid spacer or a collapsible one. I have read pros and cons just wondering what you all think? Also - I love my wife, she is amazing to support me the way she does in this hobby - baking parts dry in the oven and all. I am going to get her some diamond earrings for o...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird rear end gearing

The ring gear bolts to the differential. The diff is what needs to be replaced to get posi, or whatever you choose. Pick the limited slip diff you want and you'll see how it goes in there. The '64 has 28 spline axles, you will need to pull out the axles to remove the center section to swap the gear...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird rear end gearing

Yes I think 3.25 would be noticeable. These are heavy cars and a some extra spins help get them moving. 'Worth it' is really up to you. How much time do you spend on the interstate going 75 MPH? Are you on mostly 2-lane blacktop going below 60? Stop and go traffic? If you want to burn rubber and cr...

Re: 1964 Thunderbird rear end gearing

I have a radial tire that has about the stock tire diameter: 27.3 inches. The manufacturer (Firestone) says this tire turns 764 times per mile. With 3.00:1 rear, this converts to an engine RPM of 2483 in 3rd gear @ 65 MPH Switching to 3.73:1 gives 3087 in 3rd gear @65MPH , so almost exactly 600 mor...
