Re: 1964 new purchase basic maintenance

When I installed the Pertronix III, they recommended using a relay, which Pertronix provided, to route a full 12 volts to the coil.

Re: 1964 new purchase basic maintenance

A nice mod that pepped my car up considerably was to replace the stock wires with 8mm wires, for example by MSD. I also installed a hotter coil and replaced the stock points with a Pertronix III igniter which delivers multiple sparks per power stroke. More juice, better combustion, more fun:)

Re: A "chugga chugga" sound and then radiator fluid on the ground

Peter - If the engine continued running after the ignition was turned off, it may have overheated or the timing is way off. And the cooling system may be bone dry. I wouldn't run it, find another way to get it out to where the tow truck can snag it. Doug

Re: Can the brakes be changed to provide almost "brake on a dime?"

Hello Peter. I would say there's just an inch of pedal travel then a firm pedal. But when I first got the '64, I had a situation similar to what you're describing. That plus the level of fluid in the brake reservoir was going down but not leaking under the car. Turned out the master cylinder seal wa...

Re: 1964 new purchase basic maintenance

The AVS2 is 650 cfm which is a good match for the 390. If you're running the stock air filter housing, you could upgrade to a K&N and round filter housing to get more air flow and power.

Re: New owner of 64 hardtop!

Hello there Uk-Tbird. Welcome to the forum and good to hear about your progress.

I'm curious about your "1 of 89" comment, I didn't know that interiors were numbered? Anyway, like Terry said, please post some photos, we're all curious!

Re: Can the brakes be changed to provide almost "brake on a dime?"

Hello Peter. Likely your brake booster is failing internally or not doing it's job due to a vacuum leak or fluid leaking inside the booster. It may also be the brakes are not adjusted properly, the linings are worn, the drums need to be turned or there is a blockage in the brake lines. Unless you're...

Re: Driver door has a hard time opening

Hi there eddtheman, Re-reading your original post, I noticed you said the door sticking problem is only when using the outside door handle. So for some reason, the outside handle doesn't release the door latch the way that it should. Hopefully lubrication will free the latch up and fix this, but the...

Re: Driver door has a hard time opening

Welcome to TBird ownership and the forum. You could start by making sure the door is not physically binding against the door frame. Then apply penetrating oil liberally to the hinges and latch and work the mechanisms until they free up.

Re: dead battery

The charging system appears to be working. You may have a power drain happening when the car is not running and the ignition is off. Try disconnecting the plus battery clamp from the battery terminal, then connect an ammeter between the two. If it registers current flow, then you have a power drain ...

Re: 65 thunderbird still has power after shut off

On my '64, the electric windows and blower work when the ignition is off. I've always assumed that's the way it's supposed to be, but maybe not?

Re: 1966 Bird shift jump

6T6-T , if your car really will hop out of Park and into Reverse by itself, you should also consider disabling the vacuum e brake release until you get the shifter mechanism fixed. That ensures the e brake stays set until you manually release it. And, following Alan's recommendation to slide the st...
