Re: Polishing cast aluminum valve covers

Another advantage to buying a buffer and DIY is that you have the equipment and some experience to repair/polish the rest of the brightwork on the Bird.

Re: Removing 57 front bumper guards w/o removing bumper?

I had this same issue a few months back. I needed to remove the grill to work on the hood latches. I was never able to find a way to remove the guards even though the manual implies that it can be done. So, I removed the bumper. Actually, it was easier than I had thought. After removing about 3 bolt...

Re: 1957 PVC Grommet size

Thanks all. I have tried to purchase the grommet separately from the usual TBird part suppliers but they do not sell the grommet separately - and were not able to give me the size. So, as Alan has suggested I'll have to measure it out for myself. I know it was a long shot, but I was hoping someone w...

1957 PVC Grommet size

Does anyone know the grommet size to install a PVC valve in a 57? I ordered a kit from COSCO, but the grommet is back ordered with no expected delivery date. Figure I'd just pick one up from the local auto store. Thanks

Re: 1957 clock removal?

I don't have a step by step, but I did remove my clock. The hard part, as always, is seeing and maneuvering under the dash while laying on your back. Had to do it by feel, it was tight, but I did finally get it. So you know, after I removed the fasteners, the clock wouldn't budge. It seemed as thoug...

Re: 1956 Ignition parts

Paul, how long do you expect a Pertronix to last? My 57 came with one installed - had it for about 6 years but don't know how old the Pertronix is. Had two random engine "sputtering" issues lately lasting about a minute each. I'm checking the fuel system, but received some advice that it c...

Re: 1957 Ignition switch problem?

I just purchased a fuel pump/vacuum gauge test kit. Can I assume that if I conduct the fuel pump pressure and volume tests set forth in the shop manual, and the pump passes, that the pump is good -meaning that there is no intermittent/random issue with the pump that could come back later? If so, wha...

Re: 1957 Ignition switch problem?

You would think that some company would put out a reliable fuel pump somewhere

Re: 1957 Ignition switch problem?

As a follow up: ignition switch first. Paul, it did turn out to be the solenoid - thanks - saved time and money. Second, fuel pump. I purchased a pump from Napa before I read the posts from Per Boozeman and klogsdonjr. Tried to test it on the bench in a vice - the upper chamber was pretty strong, bu...

Re: 1957 Ignition switch problem?

Thanks. The one I have says built in Mexico, its from Carter. Hope it's decent. As for testing on the vice, do you any instruments? or just a feel test?

Thanks all - solenoids are definitely cheap enough, so I'll be replacing that no matter what.

1957 Ignition switch problem?

Hi all. Had a very strange thing happen. Was going to change my fuel pump so I was trying to get my engine to TDC, as I read this would make it easier to install a new pump. In doing so I removed the distributor cap so I could line up the rotor with the #1 cylinder. As I goosed the ignition to turn ...
