How to bleed 63-66 Power Steering

Post by tbird »

Just posted this on a thread and though it might prove useful to others in the future.

When the system is completely drained or is very low on fluid it is very important to bleed it properly, most mechanics will not realize that the windshield wipers run off the power steering system. To make sure that you get all the air out fill the pump up above the full mark and put the cap back on I then lift the front wheels off the floor with a good floor jack and start the car, it is good to have a helper to be in the drivers seat as with in seconds of starting the car you will need to top the pump up I do this with the engine running but you can shut it off if you wish. Once the pump level stabilizes have your assistant turn the wipers on (make sure there is no grit on the windshield that might scratch) then they can slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock, you will need to add oil as required to replace the air that is being worked out of the system. When the level stops going down and there are no bubbles left in the oil the system should be smooth and quite adjust level to full on dipstick.
