More than 300 Ford Thunderbird owners will be arriving in Hannibal today for the first local convention of the Vintage Thunderbird Club International. It will be today through Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Hannibal Inn and Conference Center.

The main event will be a points judged show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the Hannibal Inn soccer field. Cars receiving a senior rating in the primary class will retain this title and display it at future shows.

The convention is being hosted by the Land of Lincoln Thunderbird Club, which has members in several area cities. "In '94 they had a regional Thunderbird show here, and a lot of people wanted to come back to Hannibal, so we decided to host it," said John Buckman of Palmyra, a member of the Land of Lincoln chapter. This club was started by Terry and Dusty Fletcher of Jacksonville, Ill., who are very involved in the convention, Buckman said.

He is pleased with the help offered by local merchants, reporting they have been, "very receptive with door prizes and ads for our booklet."

Although the convention runs through Saturday night, many of the people will stay longer, Buckman said. "They will be around for a minimum of three days and some for five or six days."

After they begin arriving today, he said, "we have 65 people going on the Mark Twain Riverboat for the dinner cruise."

On Friday evening the Loafers Car Club of Hannibal will join the Thunderbird club members from across the country to show their cars on the Hannibal Inn parking lot. The public is invited to come and see all the cars Friday, as well as attend the car show on Saturday.

"There will be a lot of rare and valuable Thunderbirds," Buckman said. "There will be cars all around town. We are expecting close to 150 cars."

Some are having cars delivered to Hannibal and others are bringing them on trailers, Buckman said. "They don't drive them long distances. But some do. We will have classes from cars driven every day to cars that very seldom are driven at all, and you could eat off of any portion of them, even the undercarriage of the car. They are that clean."

The Thunderbird owners enjoy visiting with each other and the public, he said. "They all have a story about their car. A lot of them were in pieces, and they have rebuilt them from scratch. Now they are showpieces. They look better than they did when they came from the factory."

Buckman will be showing his black 1970 Thunderbird hardtop. He bought it from the original owner in 1974.

He has certification from the Ford Motor Co. that this car is one of only two manufactured like it. It is black with white bucket seats without power seats or power windows.

The original owner was J.H. Robinson of the family lumber yards in Perry and Palmyra, Buckman said. He died two years after he bought the car, and his wife sold it (in 1974).

The points judged show on Saturday will have 12 classes of Thunderbirds, Buckman said. "The oldest will be the first Thunderbirds, in 1955." From 1955 to 1957 they were two-seaters, he said. "There will be cars from that era all the way to the new two-seat Thunderbirds that just came out two years ago.

"Anybody who owns a Thunderbird and wants to enter it in the show can register it up until show time at 9 a.m. Saturday." Cars may be registered today through Saturday, and Buckman recommends doing so before Saturday.

In a points judged show first, second and third place prizes are awarded, but there may be more than one winning each place or none, Buckman explained. "Members take a lot of pride in getting those (awards), especially first place. It is not easy to get a first.

"For first place they are referred to as a senior car and always retain that designation," he said. "So if a person comes to the show and gets a first place, from then on that car will have special parking. They are recognized as a senior car that has gotten a first in a primary class from that point on even if it has a change of ownership."

All Thunderbird owners are welcome to join the local club, he said. Membership in the national club is required to participate in the show, "but the fun things you do are with the local chapter."

Shooting follows on heels of 2 robberies

By BEV DARR
Of the Courier-Post

Cliff Jawad, who had been manager of the Hannibal Inn and Conference Center for the past six years, died early Tuesday morning after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the head at the hotel.

No one had been arrested for his murder by press time Tuesday.

The hotel, which is located at 4141 Market St., remained open for business on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon an employee reported the hotel and the restaurant were open for business as usual. He said the hotel management had no comment about Jawad's death.

Jawad, whose name was reported as Khalaf A. Abdel-Jawad by the Hannibal Police Department, was 44 years old and lived in Palmyra with his family. His funeral services are pending at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.

Although there were no immediate signs of a robbery on Tuesday, according to the police, the hotel had been robbed twice earlier this year. The robberies occurred within 15 days, the first on Monday, May 17, and the second on Tuesday, June 1. The armed robbery suspect was a white male, with a slim to medium build.

On June 2, Jawad had offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction for the robberies, which he believed were done by the same person.

On Tuesday Jawad was found lying in the restaurant area of the hotel at 3:23 a.m., according to Capt. Lyndell Davis of the HPD. His injuries were inflicted by an unknown person, Davis said.

"An on-duty employee advised they had spoken to the victim just minutes prior to finding him injured," Davis said.

Jawad was taken by Marion County ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by Marion County Coroner Peggy Porter. Davis said he understood Jawad was treated at the scene and was still breathing when he left the hotel.

Davis requested anyone with any information about the murder to call the HPD at 221-0987 or leave a message under "Crime Tips" on the HPD Web site at www.hannibalpd.com.

Jawad's death is being investigated as a homicide, Davis said, "anyone with information would be greatly appreciated in a situation like this."

Because the murder was in the Ralls County portion of Hannibal, the HPD detective division will be working with the Ralls County prosecuting attorney's office, Davis said.

"We are the primary investigating agency, so if anyone has information, call us or use our Web site," Davis requested, adding that, "even a small piece of information might be the piece we need.

"We encourage anyone with credible information to forward it on," he said. Although the caller may remain anonymous, he explained, "we prefer to have the information from somebody we can contact later, but it can be anonymous. But any information they give us, we can further our investigation and hopefully make an arrest."

Ralls County Sheriff Ben Berghager also was at the murder scene Tuesday morning. Berghager explained that because the murder was in the Hannibal City limits (and also in Ralls County), the HPD is doing the investigation. However, when an arrest is made, the case will be prosecuted in Ralls County.

A native of Amman, Jordan, Jawad had been in the United States since 1979.

When he became manager of the Hannibal Inn in March 1998, Jawad said the 242 guest rooms were being remodeled, the restaurant was replacing the buffet with a full service menu, and the pool was renovated. The hotel opened in 1968 and was originally a Holiday Inn. In 1996 it was briefly a Ramada Inn.

After Jawad joined the hotel, he announced it had gained independence from a national franchise and was "now entirely a part of Hannibal." It has a convention area to accommodate 750 people and has hosted many annual events, including Missouri Democrat Days, bluegrass festivals, farm and toy shows and the Harley Owners Group (HOG) state rally.

Tate faces 2 counts of first degree murder plus 2 for robbery

By BEV DARR
Of the Courier-Post

NEW LONDON - When Kenneth Tate Jr. was being arraigned Thursday on two first degree murder charges for the death of Cliff Jawad, Judge David Mobley added two more charges that had been filed earlier that day.

Judge Mobley also charged Tate with two counts of first degree robbery, one count each for the May 17 and June 1 armed robberies at the Hannibal Inn, where the murder also occurred on July 6.

Tate was employed by the Hannibal Inn at the time of the murder, according Capt. Lyndell Davis of the Hannibal Police Department.

In charging Tate for the June 1 robbery, Mobley said Tate allegedly, "forcibly stole money while armed with a deadly weapon."

He scheduled a preliminary hearing for all four charges at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Ralls County Courthouse in New London, where the arraignment took place.

Mobley informed Tate he had the right to hire an attorney or make application for the services of a public defender. He advised Tate against making any statements about the case.

Tate, 40, of rural New London, was already being held without bond for the murder charges and the judge added that he would be held without bond on the robbery charges.

Tate is in Marion County Jail in Palmyra, from which he was transported to the courthouse in New London by the Ralls County Sheriff's Department. The cases are being prosecuted in Ralls County, because the Hannibal Inn is in Ralls County, although most of Hannibal is in Marion County.

The two murder charges were filed Wednesday morning by Judge Mobley. Tate is charged with two Class A felonies: First degree murder and first degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. The charges were filed at the request of Ralls County Prosecuting Attorney John Briscoe.

With these additional charges filed Thursday, all three recent Hannibal Inn crimes have been solved.

"We are pleased with the successful outcome of the cases," said Davis, which did the murder and robberies investigation.

"Our investigators did an excellent job in getting charges filed on such a complex case," Davis said. "More work is needed, however, as the case has evolved into other areas of interest to law enforcement."

Jawad, 44, of Palmyra, was found lying on the floor near the restaurant in the Hannibal Inn early on July 6, suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. He died soon after at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

On June 2 Jawad had offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction for the two armed robberies at the Hannibal Inn, where he had been manager for six years. When he offered the reward, Jawad had said he believed both had been done by the same robber.

Tate had previously served 22 years in a Missouri prison for a charge of second degree murder. He was released in 2002.

He was arrested July 12 after warrants were issued for two hit-and-run accidents the previous week. After his arrest, a parole warrant also was issued.

Tate had escaped twice from officers on July 23, but was re-arrested both times. He was transported to court Thursday in ankle shackles and wristcuffs.[/img]
